    You're right, there's heaps.  Lets add another clue:

    This station has/had a gated level crossing
    The crossing no longer exists

    Obviously far too open to get anybody interested. Let's toss another clue into the pot...

    This station has/had a gated level crossing
    The crossing no longer exists
    The crossing had interlocked gates operated from the adjacent signal box

    Location: At the back of the train, quitely doing exactly what you'd expect.

    Clues 2,3 & 4 narrow this down to a very small number of possibilities

    Not Kyneton - the only crossing there of which I am aware did have interlocked gates, but still exists as a level crossing, therefore failing clue 2.

    Sale is correct, on the line to the original station , now bypassed. The only other crossing I know of with interlocked gates in the country, which no longer exists and was not grade separated, was at Wodonga.

    Good question, what about Macedon? Which level crossing are you referring to? I am unaware of any interlocked crossing ever existing at Macedon.
