I think they're for noise monitoring actually?

They appear to be grease pots. Just a flash looking grease pot.

There is a sign nearby suggesting that there is track monitoring equipment in the area, and they appear to be small microphones on top of sticks? Unless we're talking about different things? I know the local residents are quite unhappy about flange squeal from freighters.

Wouldn't expect too much yet - early days...

There is only 2 microphones that I can see, about 150m city side of Copeland Rd bridge. every other solar box I have seen is a grease pot.

The TFNSW update mentions noise monitoring of work sites - e.g. work vehicles.

They are in fact a "TORFMA" (Top Of Rail Friction Modifier Applicator) and as the name suggests it does that.
Not a curve greaser/grease pot. It is to stop wheel squeal, corrugation and assist angle of attack problems. It doesn't help if "Johnny come lately" doesn't service/maintain his/her/its equipment to standard.

Fancy name, I just assumed fancy grease pot on account of all the grease the things leave behind...

TORFMA shmorfma!  Sounds like something that might be put into service on 1 April.

Hi all, These shots are from yesterday from North Strathfield, showing some works around the Station area - (I posted these in another thread because I could not find this one)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32678796@N05/9708608036/in/phot...- The Overbridge at North Strathfield, Which appears to have been Reinforced by this Massive Concrete Structure

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32678796@N05/9705377367/in/phot...- Now at Platform Level, And we see more works taking place on the Eastern Side of the Line, They appear to be digging out Foundations, with this massive Pile-Driving Machine

Gladys Beecroftian was on ABC1-TV's "7:30" visiting namesake Beecroft Bank to see/hear for herself noise from ever increasing numbers of freight trains on this steep and sharply curved 6km section of line.

One wonders if this section will be equipped with noise-walls, like those on the East Hills line quad sections?

One wonders if the track will be mounted on extra thick rubber mats, or even those Cologne-eggs, like on the Harbour Bridge?

Will the superelevation/cant on the third line be optimised for slow speed freight trains, which might reduce contract between flange and rail, which AFAIK causes wheel squeal?

Would the installation of Electronically Controlled Pneumatic Brakes keep couplers taught and reduce waggon banging noise?

Currently a curfew prevents freight trains operating during passenger peaks, so many operate at night when neighbours are trying to sleep.

With the NSFC open, could the daytime curfew be replaced by a night-time (sleeping time) curfew say between 11pm and 5am?

According to the Sydney Trains Trackwork Calender, Newcastle trains will operate via the North Shore Line, and buses will replace Northern Line trains between Strathfield and Epping between Christmas and New Years. Might I suggest that they'll get a large chunk of work done then? Not sure how it will affect the normal north/south freight traffic, but I'd hazard that it would also be suspended, given that it's very quiet then generally...

Hi all, Today I have some more Photos depicting the works around North Strathfield, and the Concord West area

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32678796@N05/11941133933/in/photostream/- They are building what looks to be a retaining wall, down the Northern End of North Strathfield Station

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32678796@N05/11941318714/in/photostream/- I assume this is the finished project of how it will look ?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32678796@N05/11941160563/in/photostream/- Meanwhile at Concord West, they are busy pouring Concrete onto the new Staircase of what will be the new Overpass

CHELTENHAM

The car park on the western side has been cleared, and temporary wooden walls installed near the platform.

BEECROFT-PENNANT HILLS.

North of Beecroft station some cuttings have been fitted with a concrete "cap", with the portion from rail level to the bottom of that cap still to be treated.

Closer to Pennant Hills a very tall cutting has be cut back with very steep sides, and the bare earth has been covered with steel mesh, presumably to be shotcreted fairly soon.

NORTH STRATHFIELD

The dive at North Strathfield is making good progress.

Walls are protected by temporary wooden fences.

Once the dive reaches structure gauge height there are cross braces across the tracks, like at Chatswood.

CONCORD

The new concrete stairs and overhead concourse are also making good progress, as well as the new Platform 1/2.

A twenty four shipping container on P2 has been modified to act as a waiting room, with two seats inside.

CHELTENHAM-THORNLEIGH

Considerable progress has been made in excavating cuttings for the third track, and concreting the cutting walls, which can be quite tall.

PENNANT HILLS - THORNLEIGH

The tracks on the Down Relief line, train stops, etc. have been removed, but the points in the main line remain.

EPPING

Longer Overhead Wiring Masts have been installed near the junction of the ECRL, though not yet installed.

PENNANT HILLS

Workers' hut seem to be sited on the site of the future ETTT, and would presumably have to be move out of the way as track laying approaches.

The footbridge some distance from the platform at the Sydney end has been replaced by a longer one, clear of the ETTT. This is not the station footbridge.

BEECROFT-PH

Some quite deep widened cuttings seem to be approaching completion.

The new cutting are covered with reinforced concrete, possibly using the shotcrete method.

CHELTENHAM-BC

Another deep widened cutting is approaching completion.

M2 BRIDGE

No work started on same, expect for some new cutting work on north side, and some new embankment work on south side.

CHELTENHAM

The Up Waiting shed seems to have lost its roof.

SIGNALLING QUESTION

Will the signals on the ETTT be:
* paired with signals on the Down North, like the East Hills Quad
* unpaired, like signals on the SSFL ?
