They shouldn't need the train to test clearances, they should have all of that known before the design leaves the page.

Clearance testing is actually quite a normal practice...Which of course would have been one of the many reasons that road delivery (on routes used for many much larger loads) is better than rail delivery. Who in their right mind would want to do over 900 kilometres of clearance testing for a one-time delivery run?

You'd think that they should be sure of clearances before the design leaves the page but when the IMU 160s were introduced in Brisbane it was discovered that they were too big for the inner city tunnels so some of the non-structural concrete had to be removed from the walls or the ceilings of the tunnels so there would be enough clearance for the new trains.The problems would usually be with the local infrastructure, not the new vehicles. It could be caused by old data that was not accurate enough at the time of recording, working on old data when stuff shifts and deteriorate around over time, less than rigorous communication during the specification and design processes (probably the most likely reason for issues in Adelaide), or even the new vehicles behaving in unexpected ways on the local track.

Three years ago I was at York Railway Museum and the Hogwarts engine an ex GWR design had scraped its cylinder covers on the platforms of the no ex GWR area on both sides! I presume it was something similar to that?

Enquiry from the railway kiosk proprietor confirmed that there had been no visit. The station is not a good place to look out for the train when it does finally appear. There are blocks on the tracks on the Seaford side of the platforms and no decent view of the line from its vicinity. The best vantage point would be the Goldsmith Drive bridge a few hundred metres to the South.
