2013 Federal Election - 7th September

  northbritish Chief Train Controller

In 1993, one week out of the election, everyone thought John Hewson would win. In 1999 everyone was convinced Jeff Kennett would easily be re-elected.

We can take nothing for granted.

I am not sure that I want K Rudd but I definitely do not want Rupert Murdoch by puppet proxy under any circumstances...  the support from the Murdoch group has been gushing and I don't want a phone tapping, self serving, two storied  liar running my country through someone else!

Here come the Murdoch conspiracies again. What about Fairfax backing Labor in '10? Or News Corp backing Labor in '07, and some of their papers again in '10? Fairfax owns more news titles than News Corp by the way.

This is not about Liberals vs Labor (+ Greens, now Palmer). It is about selling out democracy to the highest bidder.

Australia has never seen such concerted high profile media bias in its history. It used to be an editorial on page 2, now it's a bombardment of poster size front page attacks against one side 'balanced' with over the top support for the other.

For centuries powerful, wealthy conservatives have fought liberal democracy as it undermined their position. Last century saw them use their influence and money to oppose universal suffrage, organised labour and social reforms such as age pensions and health care.

Many conservatives in the US, UK and Australia openly supported the rise of Hitler. That included media magnates o:

The average German wasn't anymore ignorant that the average Aussie. Before the war got serious they managed to turn around an economy in the depth of depression, had a rising standard of living, cars for all families, to drive on new autobahns and a booming commercial/industrial sector (5 pillars Wink ). The media simply reflected what Goebbels wanted to read, see and hear.  Did that matter? The vast majority of the people were happy. As for that different family down the road they were only being 'deported'.
What happened to democracy:?:  Did anyone really care Exclamation

Then one day they looked back and said never again. NEVER AGAIN.

Where as many of the left thought Stalin was a darling.

Why there is even a former stalinist serving as a Greens senator.

For every Murdoch paper example, others of a different political bent to you can throw up an example of the same in the Fairfax publications or on "our" ABC.

If you do not like the publications then you do not have to buy them or read them.

But to suggest there is some sort of conspiracy or a lurch towards Nazi Germany... well, my advice to you is to wrap a few more layers of alfoil around your head.

I think the real question is how many current or about to be elected conservatives would give Hitler their support now? NONE!

How many 'lefties' would support Stalin? Mao Tse Tung? Castro? Guevara? The Kim family? A lot more than none would STILL support at least one of them, some would support several of them and at least one would think they were all real nice people.

It's not a left or right thing (and aren't those loaded terms Rolling Eyes )

Some conservatives use their considerable wealth and influence to protect and increase it. Whether it be running 18th Century France, Tsarist Russia, USSR, North Korea, Iran, Syria, an asbestos mining company or even a western media empire.
For these people all the baggage of a liberal democracy is an 'inconvenience'.

When you don't have an army to overthrow it you use your considerable resources to 'adjust' it to your advantage.

The German people weren't ignorant or born fascists. As an advanced western democratic nation in the 1930's Germany is a cautionary tale on the unchallenged power of influential people. Many did quite well during those years and most only questioned their support when the bombs started falling.

I see the right winged hosts are still campaigning for the Liberals. Okay off we go onto another radio station, not that there are that many radio stations. This Graeme Gilbert host sounds like he is member of the Liberals, but someone named Kevin called, and this host called him a clown, and a number of times their was aggressive in the way he spoke to the caller, talked over him, and tried to put his "views" as "gospel" so to speak.

He is the host that due to a story about Muslims in the news, he said "You're un-Australian, if you're not a Christian."

He rang because that he is concerned that IF Abbott wins on Saturday, he will try and get Tasmanian forest or forests off the heritage list - And naturally this host said good, I hope he does.

I voted today because I'm going away this weekend.  I was going home this evening and I heard on ABC radio all about Clive Palmer's delightful observations on Rupert's wife and I thought "Good, I'm glad I preferenced his party in the Senate above the major parties, the more unpredictable outsiders like Clive Palmer in the Senate the better".

Nearly every minor party got my vote before the Labor/Liberal party; Katter's Australia Party, The Democrats (who?) and the Shooter's Party... but not the DLP, never the DLP.

And yes, I voted below the line, it's the only way you get to distribute your vote the way you want it to.

Yeah, I saw/heard that this morning... He's a funny guy, sometimes I think Katter wears his hat a bit too tight, not too sure of Palmer's excuse.

I will always remember the last election, walking to the pre poll booth and someone in yellow telling me they're from the Democrats. I couldn't believe it, I think I said something like 'Wow, you guys are still getting out there, thought you'd folded.'

I've never been a fan of the DLP, but senator whatshisname did plug in a bunch of money to buy Parliament House an Australian made crockery set which was very nice.

And yes, I voted below the line, it's the only way you get to distribute your vote the way you want it to.
"don_dunstan"
Yes, below the line I think is the only way to go, know who you're voting for, and when. I start from 1 and work til there's no one else I want to preference, then I start from the bottom of the list and work back, lastly numbering all the 'I don't cares' randomly in the middle.

Those calling the shots whether the supposedly left or right don't need democracy to prosper.

Imagine the uproar if the ABC were doing Rosebud's stunts on its evening news Laughing
Show me a Fairfax front page like Rosebuds and I'll expect to see heaven full of camels Rolling Eyes

What you call yourself is irrelevant. The technique is proven and simple. In Australia if you can turn and keep just 6% of voters you effectively have a one party state. When the majority of the media increasingly marginalises any dissent whilst promoting that single party as news reporting. When people that get you there start calling in favours and 4 corners is on the payroll... Yep those Germans weren't ignorant or born fascists either.

Sore point. Time to calm down now Sad

But why (am I) so serious  Question

After WW2 at a DP camp in West Germany, one night a train turned up. The camp had a population of Ukrainian inmates (POWs but used as Slave Labour). The next day they were gone. Later the news got out that they were shipped back to the USSR and the camp (mostly eastern Europeans) rioted.

Those Ukrainians like most of the people in that camp had first hand experience of the extreme right and would now feel that of the left. (Stalin believed anyone who fell into the hands of his enemies were traitors).

So you'd rather us take it as an alleged fact? Confused In that case show us some accounting numbers to PROVE THE FACT you intend us to accept. - But you can't do that can you? Until you post some numbers your 'fact' is still just in fact a sick joke.

Surely you are going to take a moment a properly clarify exactly what you want us to assume of your most hideous statement? Intentionally taken as a joke? I didn't see the 'otherwise' alternative.

Because NO ONE jokes about the hollocaust.

This is the (at least) second thread you've used Godwin's in, and I have now given up on counting them. Maybe like Labor, it's time for you to forget this election and take up something you might actually be in with a shot at winning. Try starting a debate on whether the Earth's atmosphere might generally be expected to appear blue to most ground level observers. You might just be able to sensibly debate that topic without Godwin statements. I cannot actually speak on behalf of all these people, but I am sure TheBlacksmith, GraigW, 2301 and myself would be willing to give you the free kick of not even posting a single retort or correction to your postings.

SO PLEASE STOP CONTINUING TO TAKE THIS OUT OF CONTEXT

Yes it turned out clumsy but it was not a joke.

It was part of a thread about how you can end up with extreme governments and there is little to pick between either.
It's history and it happened. My flesh and blood is in some mass grave over there. My father and mother both 'worked' for the German War machine as slave labour and companies made money off them.

So yes I am sorry about that.
