Yes it would. Under the Howard government – boat arrivals were almost zero. Under the Rudd/Gillard/Rudd government – boats are flooding in. Abbott intends to put into place policies that work.

There was only one time with the current government where a boat came directly to Australia, and that was in Geraldton. Every single one of those Asylum Seekers, were they accepted, would have been documented. All other Asylum Seekers arrive at Christmas Island, where they are processed... meaning they are documented. If the only problem that you have with Asylum Seekers is the fact they aren't in fact documented. That could be very simply fixed, just by documenting them.

Well, that is kind of what is happening now isn't it?  Line up, get your Centrelink number and off you go........your documented; and look at the problems that we are facing.  What the feel good international Socialists don't understand is that not everyone has good intentions or cherishes the same values as the majority of Australians do like freedom and democracy - remember 9/11...........Sarah and Christine?

The simple fact is that the Australian Government does not have any way of finding out who these people really are and will probably never be able to.  The problems associated with this type of immigration are many, and being very careful here because some cases are presently before the courts - it has been witnessed that the behaviour of some of these people is less than savoury. If these people have nothing to hide or are not trying to hoodwink the Government, why are they throwing away their identity?

How many of the asylum seekers in the past 6 years have had any form of identification with them??  I would guess none.

This is the angle the people smugglers should be pushing for their clients.   Produce ID to show that you are not a "baddie" and you spend less time locked up on Christmas Island.   I could see more sympathy if asylum seekers show they aren't criminals or terrorists.   It's the unknown that many Australians distrust.

As far as I'm aware (from the article) Scott Morrison's mouth-piece has said "No comment from anyone until an official announcement on 'Sovereign Borders Policy' later next week" so we don't know if it's a new policy or what the story is... just no information at all.  So, as with many other things, despite the atmosphere of absolute crisis a few weeks ago it suddenly isn't an urgent problem requiring public attention any more.

However I have to admit, if I was in power and one of my 'five pillars of trust' was to stop the boats, the first thing I would do would be to try and suppress information so the plebs don't know whether I've been successful or not, after all 'stop the boats' is just a slogan - if the boats can somehow be removed from public consciousness then that's the same outcome.   You could probably use the excuse that you are trying to discourage others from coming or national security grounds.

The really gob-smacking thing for me is that when I posted that link this morning I fully expected to come home tonight and find a full-on vigorous defence of that political decision from our usual spokes-people, but instead?  The sound of crickets chirping.

This is one of the biggest issues with the Liberal's mineset, why do anything properly when you can just cover things up with the help of geriatric media moguls. Do they even attempt to do anything properly ?

IMHO screw the boat people, I'm not stupid enough to ever believe a few people in leaky boats is even a minor election issue, nor would I ever decide who to vote for on such a minor matter.
