There is only one way any building or object or structure could collapse strait down. You would have to remove the resistence below it.
The force of the building pushing up is greater than that of the part of the building falling down.

though i voted for broadmeadows (aka: broady line), i really enjoy the strech of track between newport and seaholme, it takes 7 minutes. The structure at Seaholme is beautiful and i really enjoy going there to get photos. Altona is absoultley hidous Bang Head (not the suburb, the station building), it just looks out of place seeing it is in a old suburb with a new station. This is why i will very rarely go past Seahome, i bet westona is exactly the same as altone Anger . I love our rail heritage, enough has allready been destroyed, if the same happens to Seaholme i will go insane Bang Head . Leave our REMAINING rail heritage ALONE BRACKS Evil or Very Mad

Hursty, IMO. Tunnels, trestle bridges and a real rural feel beyond Eltham.

UFG - Belgrave also v good, but the rest of the line is only so-so.

Altona was rebuilt in the '80s when Weribee was electrified.

I would have to say that I enjoy travelling on the Sydenham line the most. I love staring at all the sidings, branches and tracks that make up this line, seeing all the freight cars at the Tottenham yards. Look one way you see the North Melbourne yards, South Dynon, Albion-Jacana loop, look another you see Willy and Werribee branch off at Footscray, look past Sunshine you see the Melton line branch off, sidings at Albion, for me travelling along the Sydenham line is like taking a step back in time and seeing the relics of Melbourne's industries. Plenty of country and freight action as well.

I like it, too. I also like the historical feel of the MATHS stations (Malvern, Armadale, Toorak, Hawksburn, and South Yarra. The Alamein line is good, nice leafy feel to it, especially cycling on the Southern sections out to Oakleigh Wink

For me the best line would be one that has: a sense of history, waiting rooms and clean toilets (that are on every station and open), interesting views (industrial and environment) and construction (bridges, tunnels, cuttings), and trains that are comfortable, reliable, regular, and on time.

This line does not exist, but I am waiting for it.

Did you ever hear about the plans in the 1960s to demolish FSS and build an office building there Laughing?

I like the section of track between broadmeadows and jacana station where the flyover for the standard gauge is. because when your driving down pascoe vale rd and see a freight or the xpt go over its almost as if there flying. I bet its caused some accidents in its time! Laughing

I've seen some pictures of the proposed new Flinders Street Station, in fact it was a book I was browsing through the other day, but I can't remember what it was. Think of Spencer Street (thankfully now gone) but on a larger scale. Lets just say that had it been built it would have been the city's largest eyesore...

Oh and I voted for the Hurstbridge line because it's got a bit of everything, bridges, tunnels, single track, double track, various safeworking systems, great scenery further out etc etc etc. And of course it is where my loyalties lie. But there are aspects of every line that I like.

I guess for that section of the city, FSS being turned into an eyesore would not have mattered to anyone. The city was rid of one of the worst eyesores in the form of the Gas And Fuel building, only to be replaced by another one in the form of Federation Square. Great idea, great use of space, but in my opinion absolutely and highly questionable archtitecture.

You may question the architecture, but you have to respect the engineering. The Atrium must be the most complex structure I have seen. An engineer who worked on the job once explained the archetecture to me, which allowed me to actually se what was there. Its all about the triangles, look at hem closely next time you go past.
Back on topic, Hurstbridge line, bit of everything, including multiple destinations.

Thank-you to everyone who voted & posted in this forum.

It appears that the Hurstbridge line is much more popular than I thought (the tunnels do make it interesting and the ambience is admirable for the second half of the trip (from Heidelberg) out to Hurstbridge).

I would have expected the Belgrave line to be more popular considering the view along the railway line is excellent, I suppose you must also consider the route "Ringwood to Ferntree Gully" which rowdy teenagers have caused chaos to.

The Frankston line also turned out better than I expected, considering that the Sandringham line is similar.

The Werribee line as being mentioned in posts to be a strongly favoured railway line, the votes are low.

All other lines turned out as I expected, particulary the Lilydale line.

I suppose that when considering preference for a railway route you must consider all parts of the route.

You guys forgot Flemington line again Smile

I sort of prefer Interurban/longer distance lines...
such as Bendigo, Seymour-North East line, never get sick of both lines.

I voted Hurstbridge for the same reason others did being the rural / country feel. Second for me would be Belgrave line (in particular Ferntree Gully - Belgrave) for the same reason as Hurstbridge and coming in thrid the Sandringham line as I enjoy a seaside run.

Now approaching Caulfield Station, passengers for the Rowville, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines, please change trains at Caulfield

The next station is Burnley, change here for services to Knox City

The last time we had a poll like this, from memory, Sandringham won, followed closely by Hurstbridge, Werribee, Belgrave.

This one could have misleading votes though, as some sections have multiple services running along them. Officially, Richmond to Caulfield counts as Pakenham Line, Richmond to Ringwood as Lilydale Line. I'm not too sure about Flinders Street to Clifton Hill, or North Melbourne to Footscray though.

Views expressed by me are strictly my own, not of my friends, employer, or anyone else, unless otherwise stated.
