Federal Budget 2012 - Moreton Bay Rail Link project from Petrie to Kippa-Ring

  freightgate Minister for Railways

Location: Albury, New South Wales

However, the federal government's promised $742 million contribution for the $1.147 billion Moreton Bay Rail Link project from Petrie to Kippa-Ring begins in the budget "out-years", Mr Lyon said.

"Yes, that is budgeted for 2015-16," he said.

Announced in the Federal Budget last night.  Are there any further details on this project and what is it purpose?

Has a Federal election been announced for this year? I didn't think it was due until 2013...

Bill,

The Petrie to Kippa-Ring line is the long proposed political football of a passenger line to the Redcliffe Peninnsula.

Which should finally happen now.

It was also promised in the last Federal election campaign.  Seems likely to happen now but then the state still needs to co-fund and there has been a change of government.

Sir Joh started promising this in 1972, and was dug up again during most campaigns since, so don't hold your breath particularly since the recent advent of the 2018 Gold Coast games and "Tunnels" Newman in the chair....

Very early  1900's, wasn't it?

I'll believe the RRL will be built when the stations actually open.  And don't get me started on the exorbitant cost (its needed, but the final bill looks so far out of proportion to actual costs you'd think the mafia was involved).

So where is the project now? i understand some work is happening. For a significant new railway, there is surprisingly little chatter. I am too far away to pop over and see.

It is still coming along. Although not much happening yet. According to the TMR Website rail works will begin in early 2014 with the project expected to be complete in 2016. If the Richlands - Springfield extension is anything to go by, then they should be spot on with completion times.

Yeah, it is definitely moving along. Detailed design is in progress and site works will commence early next year as stated. Rail works on the Lawnton to Petrie will start next year, but the Kippa Ring part will be a bit later than that.

Price wise its seems to have gone through the roof snce Beatie was trying to get the private sector involved 12 years ago. Last I heard it was estimated around $150m in 2000 $. The scope has changed and now included a full dupliated line, alot of work at Petrie and I think adding some trackage on the main. The works at Petrie are more than significant and probably taking up a far chunk of the costs. Beatie's costing probably just had the branch connecting to the end of the siding on Platform 3.

I don't believe there are any risks to prevent this line being completed. Its supported by LNP and Newman and funding is commited from feds and change of govt won't have an impact. The days of cancelling something like this mid construction under the false pretence of saving money and usually you don't due to well written contracts that protect the suppliers are mostly behind us.

This will be the last major Greenfield addition to the Brisbane network in its current form until a 2nd river crossing is built, extension of GC line and duplication of Cleveland and SCL lines excluded.

I can tell you this will be one of the cheapest pieces of rail infrastructure built in Queensland and Australia in the last 10+years. The State was very lucky that there was a lot of infrastructure work on, and so was won with a very competitive price.

As for the actual price, and comparing it with numbers quoted 13 years ago, its a hard one to do without knowing all of the facts....

But

Did the 2000 estimate include the road works to get to the 6 stations? did it include 6 stations? did it include a grade separated junction at Petrie? did it include a new bridge over the North Pine River? did it include raising the Gympie Rd bridges? the cost of land resumptions etc and the list goes on....

As for any more greenfield additions, I tend to agree, but you could also throw in an extension of the Springfield line to Ripley if Ripley Valley takes off and the developers contribute to the extension.

I suspect the 2000 price was a branch line past Platform 3, no work south of the station including the station and probably 5 stations built to a lower std on a mostly single track.

The MBRL was annouced during a downturn, always a good time to build infrastructure unlike the last 3-5 years leading up to 2009.

Yes, apart from extensions, there will no new branches until mid-late 2020's.

And no chatter or posts for 18 months! For a large project on a new railway, there have been no press releases for months (though I note there was a general erection). Google earth is my source of updates at the moment. I am still too far away to pop over.
