This afternoon's 4:41pm (Chatswood time) service to Richmond was S sets S122/S130. This service is usually an A set. Would the trackwork between Richmond and Schofields mean that there was no A set available (stabled at RCD)?
No.
All sets should be in traffic as normal.
Any Stabled sets at Richmond would have be altered to Stable elsewhere leaving Richmond clear of all Trains.
With a Possession such as this, Schofields-Richmond, it is usual to try and keep services on the City side of Schofields as normal as possible.
After a Down Service has Terminated at Schofields the actual train set will generally return to the City on a earlier Up Service.
This is due to the fact that the train cannot complete the trip to Richmond and there is no room for the train to wait until its normal Timetabled Up departure time at Schofields.
This is happening numerous times during the day and so each train set cannot work its normal Roster.
Therefore, the consist on each trip (Up and Down) could be different because of this change at Schofields.
By the end of the day, train set types may not be in the right locations and so further re-balancing is factored into the STN before trains are Stabled.

The STN has this train's consist as 8K. Normally 8A but altered working due to the STN.

This morning on the East Hills Line on Tripview there was a scheduled K set run and the train that actually did do that run was indeed a K set.
Yes.
Four (4) 8K set Rosters started running on Sector 2 from September 16, as per STN 2206.
It is planned to increase this number to ten (10) 8K sets, in 2014, as we progress with the introduction of further Waratah sets on Sector 3 and the retirement of our faithful S set Fleet on Sector 2.

Thinking about the sectors actually got me wondering, for the CityRail network (now Sydney Trains and Intercity section of NSW TrainLink), what might be the longest and shortest non-stop running of a train for passenger service? What I mean is what's the longest or shortest time between a train commencing a passenger service and then terminating or otherwise being removed from service. In short, when a train will empty itself of passengers because it has reached a terminating station and will later turn around to commence another service or when a train has to empty because it is entering stabling, that's when the time stops.
I was having a think about this and the shortest running of a train would likely be the regular Olympic Park - Lidcombe services followed by the Clyde - Carlingford services. Outside of these two very short lines I'm guessing the shortest regular running of a train would be one of Bondi Junction - Hurstville or City Circle - Ashfield (when a train exits from/enters stabling) or City Circle - Revesby (when a train exits from/enters stabling).
As far as the longest non-stop running, I would suspect it would be the endless Bankstown Line/Inner West Line loop. I'm not sure if any particular train services do it, but theoretically a particular train could be circling around for the entire day without ever being removed from passenger service. An inbound Bankstown Line service after progressing around the City Circle becomes an outbound Inner West Line service, then becomes an inbound Bankstown Line service again and so on and so forth. Of course, many of the services on these lines do terminate at Ashfield or Liverpool or are otherwise put into stabling from Central.
After the introduction of the October timetable, this loop would no longer operate though.

However, with the K set Rosters, running on Sector 2, commencing from Hornsby MC, the sets provided for these Services can also be T sets, or even S sets.

Yes, you are correct.
Other than A set Rosters, Sector 3 Rosters are designated to run with one of the set types either S, K, or T, however, any one of those set types can run on any of those designated Rosters.
Therefore, Roster 178, was provided by a T set, until it failed, being replaced by a C set.

Under the old timetable for example, there used to be a late night outbound Bankstown Line service that crossed over onto the "oncoming" tracks at Campsie (and picking up/dropping off passengers at platform 1) before switching back over before reaching Belmore. There were also rare services on the East Hills Line that terminated at Turrella station (this one late at night) and East Hills to clean the points there.
I see the Turrella service still exists under the new timetable, and there are a few morning trains which terminate and commence at East Hills.
But I realised that with the new express tracks between Wolli Creek and Revesby, the section of track that allows trains to switch between the express and local tracks at Beverly Hills no longer seem to be used since the express services travel on the express tracks for their full length.
Does anyone know if there are trains that still use this section of track? Also, does anyone know if the Bankstown Line still has a train that cleans points around Campsie?

Weekdays, using the points at Kingsgrove:
Down Service, 62-U, 2133 hours Circular Quay to Macarthur (via Airport), due to pass Kingsgrove 2201 hours.
Up Service, 65-G, 1228 hours Macarthur to Circular Quay (via Airport), due to pass Kingsgrove 1310 hours.
Up Service, 56-V, 2128 hours Macarthur to Circular Quay (via Airport), due to pass Kingsgrove 2210 hours.
Weekends, using Platform 1 at Campsie:
Down Service, 59-Z, 2157 hours Circular quay to Liverpool (via Bankstown), Campsie departs 2230 hours.

Was on platform 18/19 at Central,the night before last and the team dispatching the trains were doing a great job. Lots of loud whistles at door close time and no delays. The seemed to be enjoying themselves.
The countdown timer on the PID is a big improvement although it doesn't completely remove all information about the train at "doors close" time.
I remember from my time in the UK that departure displays would go completely blank about a minute prior to departure. A good idea as it helps prevent passengers throwing them selves at the closing doors.
