Noarlunga Line Shutdown

Let's be fair to the bus drivers though, it's actually quite a good approximation of the ride quality on a Jumbo with the abominable wheel flats shattering your vertebrae one by one. Then there's the evil genius ultimatum of choosing between having your insides jellied by the vibrations in a power car or getting thrown across the interior of a trailer car every time the power car hits the throttle.

At least it's Southlink and not Light City Buses doing the substitutes, then you would have all those ride quality issues plus…

Just in case anybody was doubting the necessity of the three vegetation restriction zones each side of the new electrified lines, there was a bit of wind in the southern half of England last night (about the same as Tuesday last week around Adelaide) which had some less than positive implications for some of the overhead wires...

I do find it interesting that they use tramway-style suspension wires for 25 kV AC lines instead of gantries or individual masts, that looks like a recipe for a pantograph incident to drag down the wires for every track at once.

RoW or WBP is to use "tramway" style suspension for 25 kV except for the very high speed lines that is one of the benefits of 25 kV.

Considering the low speeds allowed on the Adelaide Metro lighter weight suspension would be justified with just the contact wire without catenary. Seems to work OK in Europe on 16 kV.

Koutsantonis is still adamant train services will be resuming on the Noarlunga Line in 4 weeks according to facebook. It will be very interesting when he figures out he needs to delay it a further couple of weeks.

Some observations from today.

As Milkomeda showed in his pictures yesterday, earth and return conductors run out from Tonsley Jn to Oaklands xover up line.  Still no contact wire Raglan Ave - Tonsley Jn down line.

Steel cantilever masts being installed at Signal 1431, Warradale.

Signals lit red form Hove to Marino N end and in Lonsdale area.

Signal heads replaced on Tonsley branch and axle counters being installed but no sign yet of the up signal 1036? off the branch.  Could Tonsley service start before Noarlunga?!!

The one on the south side of the bridge?
Thats the recycled water main from the Glenelg treatment works to the parklands, only installed a few years ago.

I believe the recycled main was tunnelled under the railway with excavation and directional boring from the top of the cutting either side of the line. Purple plastic trunking was used for this project.  I have a photo from that time (2009) which shows the pipe bridge and the paint condition of its central support suggest it wasn't new at that time.  I would guess the pipe bridge is a fresh water main.

Construction side of the signalling works are now complete from Adelaide to Hove. I just bloody wish they would test that part of the line and get some partial services to Oaklands in the next few weeks

Marion station and underpass works need to be completed so that the temporary ped crossing with its fencing across the track can be removed.  A large crane was present this afternoon which I assume had been used to install the steel frame for the new platform shelter.

Correct Alex, the "pipe bridge" which has always been in the way when watching trains from Keswick Bridge goes back a long time. I believe that it was there when I was in high school (70's) and I just watched some vision from 1986: it was there at that time.
Thanks for your coverage of the Noarlunga works!

Construction is finished but are they actually operational?  Hove is at least a fair way down; in theory they should now be able to test diesel trains the length of that line assuming that section of track can be possessed with fully operational level crossings etc.

This morning as I rode my bike along the "Greenway" from Oaklands to the city, three sets of signals stopped road traffic for no apparent reason assisting me with a virtually non-stop ride through Ascot Park and Edwardstown. On arriving at work, I was informed that a test train was scheduled for 8.00am this morning to Oaklands and return. Has anyone sighted anything?
  steam4ian Chief Commissioner

YES!
  steam4ian Chief Commissioner

Further response.

At approximately 10:20 this morning a two car 3000 set proceeded through the underpass en route to Oakalnds to turn back.

I was told by DPTI staff and contractor that 2 more trains would run today if possible. PHOTOT OPPORTUNITY!

Uncle Tom and Captain Hook were supposedly on the train I saw this am.

As trains pass through the Underpass there is considerable rail noise and some flange squeal, you can certainly hear the train coming. Some damping may have to be applied to the rails.

Do you mean 15 KV AC @ 16.7 Hz used to electrify railways In the likes of Deutschland, Schweiz, Österreich, Liechtenstein, Sverige, etc

Just saw (1355 hrs) the two car 3000 set from the rear of the SAHMRI site heading out of the ARS on the Sealunga line. Didn't catch the first unit but the second unit was 3007.
Further to what steam4ian said in a previous post, this could possibly be the second test train for the day.

I got two good photos of 3007 and 3017, one approaching Oaklands station and one looking toward the Diagonal/Morphett Roads rail crossing. The barriers went down on approach but went up immediately the train stopped. While not at top speed, the train was running easily and at a good pace. If only for electoral reasons, I would guess that we may soon see regular trains to Oakands with the Seaford/Noarlunga Centre bus interchange transferred from the city as during the first shutdown for the ConventionCentre construction work.

Even the train drivers are speculating train services may very likely return in November now (At least to Oaklands)

At least something positive came out of today even if the government is clearly pushing this for election purposes.
