On Wednesday I reported 273 in the lead on an up service in the morning and that afternoon the same unit 273 leading an up at Lalor about 5.16 or 5.17pm. This would mean that it had it's third run for the day as 288 would have to lead the down for 273 to then lead the up again after reversing at South Morang or Epping.

Thursday it was reported by a work mate that she had caught a Hitachi unit to the city from Vicky Park around 4.08pm.

Short while later I noted possibly the same unit at Vicky Park with 288 in the lead on the 4.37pm down South Morang.

You really can't see these lasting over the summer without aircon.

I'm sure they worked last summer with no aircon. I caught one home from the CBD to Kananook or Seaford more than once.

Oh and while I'm at it, went for a motorcycle show, coincidentally right opposite:

ok guys hitachi 299m 294m ran the 8:11am today platform 1 reservoir up flinders. I worked out that it arrives flinders street at 8:45am then departs 8:47am going through the city loop back to epping which arrives around 9:32am then stables. so guys if you want a hitachi its a gamble at the moment because when it runs is always different. if your at flinderstreet keep a look out platform 1 around 8:45 because that's when it arrives

Are they running in the afternoon/evening at all? I might go to FSS now and have a look. I'm not a gunzel but I always enjoyed the fact that you could open the windows and let some fresh air in, and I've always thought their seating layout was good in that it tended to allow/encourage people away from crowding around doors.
I would like to ride on one one last time before they are retired which would seem imminent.

I don't think Metro are going to retire them anytime soon. I heard that they are using all the trains they can get thier hands on during peak hour.

Nice to know. I spent about 40 mins lurking around FSS this afternoon keeping my eye out for a set but didn't see one. Not to worry.
How many Hitachi 6-car sets are currently available for revenue service?

From VicSig:  http://www.vicsig.net/suburban/train/Hitachi

273M-1909T-274M
275M-1910T-276M
277M-1919T-278M
279M-1922T-280M
285M-1977T-286M
287M-1979T-288M
293M-1987T-294M
299M-2007T-300M

That equates to 4 6-car sets that remain in service.

Wouldn't the new X-traps that are under construction and in service (the new ones) be used to replace those roles by the Hitachi's? Or do they have their own services??

Just a general question.
  chapzboy Station Master

Thanks for that; I hadn't thought to look on Vicsig. Hopefully will see one around soon.

That's fine. As I live in WA and reside in the Sydney forums, VicSig is a good source. Anyway, back OT ...

Considering sightings of them have dropped off considerably in the last six months, I think your logic (which I myself held onto as well) is starting to falter. A shame to see them go, but they've really had a second crack at life-after-death over the last few years, so I'm thankful for that.

I never said they'd stopped running completely, more than their days are numbered as they don't seem to be used as much, because they're not as required.

If I could find the tweet where I heard they were using every train, I'd post it here.

Hitachi 288M lead the LAST transfer from Eltham this morning to Macauly sidings for permanent stabling...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/henrysrailwaygallery/10882208963/

(Copy & Pasted from my caption):

Metro Trains Melbourne has stored their Hitachi fleet at locations across Melbourne.
(3x 6 Cars at Macauly)
(2x 6 Cars at Newport)
(1x 6 Cars at Craigieburn)
(1x 6 Cars at Epping)

Since August 2013 the Hitachi trains have been doing empty car runs from Eltham to Epping and return to keep the fleet operational in case of "emergency use". Today was the last day for those transfers....

One 6 car set is at Epping and will be used in emergency uses until the 20th of December when it will run to Broadmeadows for storage.

In the new Summer timetable, all Hitachi trains will be officially removed from service.

Have a nice day. Smile
