Seeking Perth Recommendations

    Location: In a FAM sleeper
    I'm hoping next year to visit Perth and was wondering if anyone is able to recommend

    1. budget accommodation preferably close to public transport and

    2. What would be interesting to see and do from a rail fan perspective.

    I'm especially interested in passenger trains including preserved Western Australian trains and trams. I have some interest in locomotives especially ones that aren't in NSW.

    Well most of our passenger trains not on the Clarkson/Mandurah line are from the early '90's. Beyond that you will want to look at Whiteman park where there is a vintage electric tram and historical diesel and steam trains providing rides on the rails around and through the park. Or you could even take a tour around the park on a restored vintage bus

    You might be able to catch some iron ore trains out at Thornlie or on the rails near the Fremantle port

    Now; for accommodation the sad truth is that there is not really any decent budget accommodation below $120/night. There is a B&B on Safety Bay Road that is an 18 minute bus trip from Rockingham Station which has rather decent reviews ( http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g488365-d1760494-Reviews-Waikiki_Beach_Bed_Breakfast-Rockingham_Greater_Perth_Western_Australia.html ) and costs about $130/night.

    When you consider that a 3.5 star hotel costs $765/night, a 4.5 star costs $1688/night and a 5 star costs $2305/night that is rather good value

    Hi Geoffrey, I take it you wont have a car. So I suggest you look for accommodation in the Bayswater, Bassendean. Midland area. this will put you in reasonable distance to suburban rail, Rail Heritage Museum, Woodbridge triangle NG & SG rail. Whiteman park not sure of Public transport to Whiteman park but the Guys from Bennet Brook Railway or Perth Electric Tram society maybe able to help you on that one. No Public transport to HVR.

    Some friends of mine own this, if it fits the budget?  South Fremantle, fright line 1 street away, free clipper bus in/out dero, fremantle train on hand for the city, or anywhere

    Quite near the airport.
    Great meals in the dining rooms
    10 mins by train to City - on the right line to get off at Woodbridge or Midland to watch some freight trains, stop by the Rail Museum, Maylands Model Trains & Stanbridges hobbies if that interests you.
    Midland Rail Line connects through to Fremantle without changing trains or change in city for all other lines. Mandurah is a good day out by train.
    Prospector services from East Perth terminal (Midland line) and Australind train does a day return from City Station

    955 bus to Ellenbrook can be caught from Bassendean Station (Midland line) see info in the link.

    I've stayed in the Ibis Budget Hotel on the Great Eastern Highway just West of the Tonkin Highway. Booking.com suggest a price exactly at your limit per night. It was called the "Formule 1" under previous ownership. The rooms are clean with all the required items (if basic) and a self service breakfast was offered cheaply under the old owners.

    I like it since I usually get a rental car and I don't have to drive far after a long flight from the East arriving late in the evening. Bus routes run past the hotel.

    The Dundas Rd bridge at the south end of Forrestfield yard should be accessible by bus and from there and at ground level good views of many types of train (including PN trains shunting) can be obtained.

    The Rockingham Road bridge at Kwinana yard would give a view of the Bauxite and Alumina trains to and from the South West and gives a view of the triangle just North of the yard. I'd guess a connecting bus from Kwinana station should take you there. (There used to be a bus interchange right there years ago).

    There is the one Aurizon iron ore train which passes through Midland and Forrestfield on its way to Kwinana port and back. Probably better to see it before (north of) Forrestfield as it is cut in half there prior to continuing on to Kwinana for unloading (used to be, anyway). Then again, I suppose you have twice as much chance of catching a train (albiet shorter) on the southern side of Forrestfield. I can't provide times, but I have seen quite a few in the afternoon between Forrestfield and Kwinana. The wagons are the yellow CFCLA CHEY and CHCH usually pulled by 2x ACA class.

    Also next to PN kewdale yard there is the BP siding, usually with an L class shunting tankers, and the Prospector (perth - kalgoorlie DMU train) depot

    There is also the spur line to Sadliers running across Kewdale road, if you'd like to see an 81 class pulling Sadliers vans
