Only posting in the SA forum, due to the vehicle rego. I do realise it could be anywhere.

It's a Mexican plate (you can see the triangle decal at the top and the "Victoria - the place to be" slogan) and going just by inspection of the location it is 100% definite that it is not in South Australia.

Compare to this example on Wikipedia:

I would suggest the moderators handball this one over the border.

Agree it is a Victorian Rego.

Probable location Google Maps Link Altona, Vic area on the Geelong Line.

OK, thanks guys. Note the time of my original post, and you will probably understand my mistake. I had just finished a shift myself.

Blue 520 appears to be right, I used to live near there; it's west of Newport station.  The lines on the left are the Altona/Werribee line, the middle track is the broad gauge freight link and the vehicle is actually stuck on the standard gauge ARTC line.  It's also possible it could be a bit further out at Galvin where there's a similar set-up with two freight tracks and the suburban lines?

The ARTC trains can get up to quite a good speed along that section, I'm amazed that it managed to stop in time before hitting the Patrol.

It appears to be good sighting distance. Also, the PN train pictured could have been warned of the vehicles position, and have come to a stop clear of the vehicle, if they were already on the section. But overall, I cant believe the drivers stupidity.

That side of the track (far right) is fenced so heavens knows what they were doing on that side of the track.  No access to any road visible.  BTW: I moved this thread into Victoria at the request of a user earlier today.

Yeah, thanks for the move Brian. It was about 3.30 this morning when I posted originally, and in a half sleep, just saw the blue an white plate, and it didn't fully register.

I would hope that the Vic police are well and truly aware of this incident already.

By the way, the pics actually came off a 4wd forum I frequent, so no real idea how long ago it took place.

Going by my brief knowledge of the line, that would be the loop line that the train is in so it is likely it wouldn't have been moving all that fast. Not that that in any way excuses this moronic behaviour. Actions like this in my opinion should result in an automatic 12 month loss of license, and vehicle impoundment. Wankers.

Oh and one other thing, SA don't have Blue on White license plates, they have black on white.

ACT - Blue digits on a white background
NSW, fullsize - Black digits on a yellow background
NSW, slimline -  Black digits on a white background
NT - Orange digits on a white background
QLD - Brown digits on a white background
SA - Black digits on a white background
TAS - Blue digits on a white background with a brown and green emblem depicting the Thylacine (or Tasmanian Tiger if you like)
VIC - Blue digits on a white background with a Southern Cross depicted in a blue V
WA - Blue digits on a white background with a blue top crossbar featuring a setting sun in yellow
FEDERAL INTERSTATE - Green digits on a Gold background, mainly reserved for long haul trucks.

A quote from a Victorian police sergeant who is a member of the 4wd forum I mentioned previously.

Victorian registered vehicle but did this occur in Vic or elsewhere?

Our Transit Section is interested.

Sorry, I strongly disagree. Idiots like this need to be pulled into line. Its not just the possibility of him losing his vehicle because of his stupidity- ie the train not stopping in time, but the trauma caused to the train drivers. They DO NOT KNOW if the vehicle is occupied when they hit it. The DO NOT KNOW if they have killed someone in a collision with a vehicle. There are enough issues with vehicle/train interactions at level crossings, let alone having twits like this trespassing into the corridor and causing incidents like this.

Do you not think noone involved would have reported this seriously 2 train crews, gangers
and the train controller and noone reported it....

I'd have to say this driver is a fair bit smarter than the driver responsible for this incident at Springvale.

State Government plates here in SA are Blue characters on a white plate.

Yes, but you aren't likely to see state government plates on a modified 18 year old 4x4. I could of included all sorts of 'special plates' like state government plates, military plates, or the fact that the official car of the Governer General has no numbers or letters but instead the image of a crown. My point was to list the most common plates for each state.
