Boat People - where to now!

  9034 Train Controller

You've quoted some out-of-date figures there.  In fact, AUSAID was actually closed by the Abbott government the other day and absorbed into DFAT so they don't even exist any longer as an agency.

9034, your demeanour and manner is very much like another poster here on Railpage, do you have multiple handles here?
don_dunstan

It is from the DFAT  website as at yesterday.  If you believe they are old of date show me the updated figures and the reference.

Do you normally accuse people of breaking the rules when you can't back up your argument?

As far as I'm aware it's not against the rules to have multiple handles here; someone may wish to correct me.

You're quoting figures from a recently abolished program, that's all I can tell you.  I'm not bored enough to look for the updated information but you're welcome to do this on your own if you wish and pretend that it's me who's actually refuting you.

Incorrect. There is a difference between an agency/program being abolished and it being absorbed in to another department. The 2013/14 figure for Indonesia stands for now - we probably won't know if that has changed until MYEFO in January. We won't know what 2014/15 looks like until the second Tuesday in May, but the Government has said that aid will grow in line with inflation over forward estimates. I don't know if AusAid even held the money or were rather just an administering agency.

Also remember the billion dollar standby loan facility for the Indonesian Government, the $15 million announced about a month ago for the Centre for Indonesian Studies, etc.

The exact number hasn't been decided or officially announced yet but despite what you've said in the rest of that paragraph Joe Hockey's beer coaster projections are for $4.5 billion to be cut over 4 years.  "Grow in line with inflation?" Hmm... I think I'll put that under the category of the Gonski "This is a bipartisan policy" promise.

What so they can't borrow that money elsewhere?  Not exactly a generous enticement is it.  And "The Centre for Indonesian Studies" funding of $15 million... Ouch, that'll really hurt if we take that away from them when they don't stop the boats.

"Stop the boats or we'll de-fund the Centre for Indonesian Studies".  As the kiddies say... LOL.

Yes, but at least mine has some hair left on it Razz. I do have a rather oddly shaped bald spot though...It sort of resembles a horseshoe, and hides a built in dinner plate.

Speaking of hair; I wore a wig to a party last weekend, one of those ones you get from the two-dollar shops.  It was disturbing how much I liked flicking my new hair around and twirling with it... I fully understand now why those geriatric Italian ladies in my neighbourhood love their free-flowing blonde rugs.

$4.5 billion reduction in the budget forecasts of the previous Government, which correlates to aid growth being limited to inflation - as per the costings submitted to and reviewed by the PBO during the election process.

Surely someone of your knowledge on these matters would have a more sophisticated and nuanced approach to understanding the strategic linkages of these policies? Don't disappoint us all now.

I would love a free-flowing blonde rug.  I have a work Xmas party coming up and I was thinking about getting a 'Heidi' rug complete with plaits. It's not a fancy dress party - I was just thinking I could be twirling my blonde plaits seductively as I get drunk and make kissy-faces at the CEO.

Two observations before this thread descends into oblivion:

One is that there was a hard-core group of people with one person in particular who was keeping it going.  While it was amusing to most it did stretch out for longer than it should have and it also became a bit repetitive.  I know from experience it's not healthy to keep feeding someone's delusional structure so it's a good thing that our protagonist isn't here and longer so this thread can die a natural death.

The second is that Abbott has shown how it's done now - turn it into a military operation and keep it out of the news permanently.  You gotta hand it to him, it's the exact right way (from a political point of view) for it to be handled - once it's out of the news it's also out of the public consciousness.

We have a Coalition Government that promised to Stop The Boats, but it hasn't.  If it did, we wouldn't have the weekly briefings from a politician and an Army Officer.

While I am at it, we have a Coalition Government that promised to Axe The Tax, but it cannot because too many idiots who voted for them in the House of Representatives also voted for the Greens in the Senate.  Paul Keating was correct when he described the Senate as unrepresentative swill and the sooner the Senate is abolished, the better.

We have a Coalition Government that, to date, has twice back flipped on Gonsky.

We have a Coalition Government that has just announced it will not honour its promise on the National Broadband Network.

Don't blame me.  I voted Labor in both the House of Reps and the Senate.

You won't see them resigning because they are doing what they promised.   The boat quantities have reached an almost zero level (not bad in a few months).   Let those in gov. now run the show without being told what to do by the ALP and Greens, they should remember they lost the election.

I don't remember any requirement for the Opposition to keep quiet. The Coalition won the last election partly because they never shut up whilst in opposition. As soon as a government loses an election, the scrapping/campaigning starts with the aim of getting back in power.  Both sides do it, so I suggest you relax and learn to live with it.
