Hearing reports of 9102 off the rails in Melbourne (West Footscray)

    X42-X43(cab to cab) brought in the portion of 9102 that was earlier handled by T400 toward Appleton Dock past Sims St @ 22:40.

    Lowndes, are we taking about an occupation of the main also?

    If it is to be completed by 21:00 today where does that leave the MP5 and PM6 ?  Will the MP5 run?

    I should have stated Broad gauge, up trains last night could get through, Down trains couldnt.

    Occo to start on the Main and Local lines (Full Occo) from 21:00 tonight until 10:00 tomorrow morning.

    Metcalf cranes have arrived at West Footscray station around 7pm tonight to set about clearing up the mess from yesterday's 9102 derailment.

    Sure will.  This is going to be very expensive.  I looked in detail at the derailment and noticed (as  no expert mind you) 7 wagons off as Rodney found yesterday.  The interesting fact is the wagons off stretch back past the junction of the dual gauge into Tottenham Yard. So could the wagons have already been derailed prior to reaching ARTC SG territory?

    Metcalf are getting their 350t monster set up and loading the counterweights from the truck to clean up  the 9102 derailment mess at West Footscray. Sat 30/11/2013.

    Y152 with container flats to collect the containers from the 9102 derailment has just arrived and will travel toward the Tottenham Yard direction for the loco to run around(most likely McIntyre loop) and come back to West Footscray and wait for the cranes to load the containers. The 200t Metcalf crane has placed itself trackside to assist in the transferring of containers.

    Images received this morning from Rodney N show a lot of clean-up since the previous evening. Y152 collected a number of containers and transferred those into Melbourne this morning. According to recent reports there are still 2 wagons at the location.

    Now they get down to business with some oxy cutting on the wagon, then they lift the 2 containers off, followed by the wagon itself. This all happened at around 1am this morning.

    Without prejudicing the outcome of formal investigations that will no doubt take place you have to shake your head in despair at the condition of the track through here. Rail pagers will be aware of the derailment of the V/Line standard gauge passenger service in this general area. Both the timbered and concrete sleeper end track are both in terrible condition considering the state of ballast, drainage and sleepers on track that is part of or interfaces with the national network.  Of course someone will stridently claim it was fit for purpose. A very nice out type of response. I hope ATSB ties this investigation with the previous one.

    The SG derailment in 2011 of the Vline Service happened on a similar piece of track however I have mentioned the derailment of 9102 was more on the #Vline side of the network as the wagons were clearly off the track prior to reaching the dual gauge section of the network.  This is what I have observed.

    I don't dispute the network needs work but from ARTC ot Vline?

    This accident raises some interesting issues that have not so far needed to be addressed.
    Who is responsible for an accident which occurrs at a boundary between differant rail operators.
    There are many of these types of boundaries now in Australia.
    ATSB investigations usually take years before a finding is made, and ATSB reports do not determine liability.
    So who foots the bill to clean up the mess.

    Thanks Bevans, see they've decided to put in concrete sleepers.  Is that so they can tell ATSB they've been pro-active in agddressing issues and risk!!!!
