maybe the hitachis have moved, so that the fleet can remain operational if required?

That would be so awesome, because I ain't going into the city at 7:30am, even if it is for the purpose of riding in a Hitachi (which I love way more than the others)

hitachi 299m 294m ran the 8:28am flinderstreet service to Epping today

Nope.

All three are still at Macaulay.

And still as dead as when they were put in there.

There are still 3 hitachi sets hibernating at Macaulay. Just went past, 2 of them seem to be hiding.

I can hear trains from the station where I live and one sounds awfully a lot like an hitachi.

I had a look at last years Hitachi spotting records for 2013 and noted when they took passengers.

284M--292M - derailed 3 January 2013
278M--285M - 23 May 2013
275M--279M - 6 July 2013
273M--288M - 1 November 2013
294M--299M - 18 December 2013

Then I looked at a summary I posted here early in 2011
http://www.railpage.com.au/f-t11365881-s25.htm

So unless the other two Hitachis ran in 2012 their reported last runs were -

282M--295M - 12 August 2011
290M--298M - 16 September 2011

Comeng trains have the same horns, and T classes sound similar as well (not sure about P classes).

Heihachi_73

Correct, but it is possible to identify between them by sound (not just the horn). If you know what to listen for it's fairly easy to differentiate between Hitachi and Comeng sets by sound. I've quite often heard Hitachis going past on the down (from my house, about 1 km away) and walked over to photograph them on the up.

You said 279M-275M last ran on the 6th of July, but I saw it on the 8th of July. Must have forgotten to post it then

To me, the Taits, Harris' and the Comengs, all have/had similar sounding motors and the Hitachi's were the odd ones out. But that may just be me.

Why did you post that? 201M was withdrawn ages ago. In fact, it was withdrawn in 1994

He was displaying a typical example of 'Trains in a tip' being a play on the question of where one can see the 'Trains in a trip.'

Here's another example: http://www.vicsig.net/index.php?page=suburban&carriage=6000&cartype=T&traintype=4D

I went for a walk around Craigieburn and noticed that 279M is the Hitachi there, so to sumarise their locations -

275M--279M at Craigieburn
278M--285M at Macaulay next to the bike path and creek
273M--288M at Macaulay closest to the Upfield line
282M--295M at Macaulay, in the middle
290M--298M at Newport - north yard
294M--299M at Newport near East Block

I would like to request that no one claims the Hitachis are retired until someone hears something from Metro that they're retired.
