Perceptions mean nothing when the cost to the government to provide this supposedly superior form of transport is expected to be tens of millions more than the road-based option.Or cost to the tax payer....!
Whilst I may enjoy trains, why do I want to throw my tax money into a pit that services very little and we still have a two-lane Pacific Highway which the majority use.
If there was a commercial trade that could support it, then great. But unless some mine opens and needs rail, then it won't happen. Tourist railway?! dreaming!

Hope the time will prove you wrong.I would agree whole heartedly as the proposal as I read it is more to provide a 3km shuttle type service along the coast, maybe its part tourist in the beginning owing to the holiday park it goes to, but Byron is not just a tourist location & has a fair population base that this proposal targets.

I would agree whole heartedly as the proposal as I read it is more to provide a 3km shuttle type service along the coast, maybe its part tourist in the beginning owing to the holiday park it goes to, but Byron is not just a tourist location & has a fair population base that this proposal targets.
The Ballyhooley service in Port Douglas was/is very similar to what is being proposed in Byron Bay...about the same distance and connecting various resorts to the central marina in a similar town. It's simple and it's for the tourists. The locals drive their cars.

It appears that they are being serious about this and have enlisted some rail consultancies to help them deal with Rail Safety and government side of views.
At least it is a move from just asking govt to do it which will not happen.
Because of my past association with the New England Railway Inc I was contacted in July about availability of Railcars for this Project. I forwarded on Information to the appropriate persons but I am not aware of the results of this communication.
But it looks like the project will go ahead.

There are plenty of people who believe that over a hundred kilometres of track should never of been deserted on the east Coast of nsw and that figures mentioned to have the line re commisioned are exaggerated.

To compare, Alkane at Dubbo had costed the upgrade of a 30k, section of the Molong line from Toongi to Dubbo to a Class 1 track at $30m.
This included replacing or upgrading 44 bridges/culverts, rebuild 26 level crossings (7 across main roads, the rest access to properties), and provide 45,000 sleepers, 14,460 tonne of ballast and replacement line from 76t (class 5) to 92t CWR line (class 1).
The costing worked out at $1m/km according to their EIS.

Some of it would be ok, some of it might need bog holes dug out or a tamp.
How quick did they put the new bridge at Boggabri when they had to?
Get Byron Bays unemployed to help for work for the dole.
There has to be a way without spending one billion, everything doesn't have to be brand new, they won't be running coalies.

Even if the line was $1m / kilometre to restore a line (like near Dubbo which does not have the same 'swampy' issues as this line), and does not include the cost of rolling stock, maintenance or staff, who can actually justify the restoration? Maybe for some tourist?
Tourist lines that are actually working strugglle to survive.

The line is owned by the NSW Govt, so if the line is to be reopened, it will be the NSW Govt who does it
and they wont be restoring the line on a shoe string basis.
If the line is to carry NSW trains , it will have to be restored to mininum of a class 3 line , which means replacement of all
the wooden bridges, and you wont do that for $1 million per km.
In addition , if you feel so strongly about the line been re opened, there is no point complaining about it here, as no one on Railpage
can do anything about it.

Let's imagine, for a moment, we have a little railway - say, from Hopetown to Castleville. It runs in an area with lots of rivers and valleys and all that sort of terrain. Very pretty to look at, but we need a lot of bridges, so when we built our little railway, we built lots of bridges. At the time, we had access to cheap and plentiful wood, so we built the bridges out of wood. The bridges make up about a third of our track distance.
But while our little railway was doing well in its earlier years, in recent times its traffic has dried up and so we had to close down and abandon our railway. This happened a few years ago, and our wooden bridges were starting to rot. Now they're all rotten and basically worthless. If the youngest sandwich boy (or servant girl, or the executive general manager's stepdaughter/nephew/shrivelled senile grand-uncle) at Hopetown station refreshment room was to jump on them, they'd all collapse.
Who is to say our once-proud little railway is not stuffed?

Ask the people who built the Bopggabri bridge in a week can they do a deal on a few trestle replacements then you need the Premier to talk to Tweed Head council and see if they are interested in railing to Byron bay if not shortem the line to Ocean Shores.
