Unusual tram sightings - Melbourne

If the government (this one or the next one) takes up the order option for the extra 100 E class trams (to make a total of 150 E class), then you can probably expect Kew, Camberwell and Essendon to all get them (or at least the future incarnations of those depots), this would allow both Malvern and Glenhuntly to replace all/ most of their Z class trams with A and B class trams.

I wouldn't be surprised if this issue (the E class order extension) comes up in next years state election.

If this did happen, the last of these trams wouldn't likely enter service until about 2022, so it's a long way away.

I doubt that Camberwell will get any Es, as routes 70 and 75 seem to cope fine with As and Bs.

This was scanned from a slide and the date was not recorded but I suspect it may have been Aust Day 1979 when there was a Transport Cavalcade in the City and blocked off Bourke Street with shuttle buses completing the journey.

Wanted to share this as it brings back so many memories.

Route 96 has come along way since that photo with trams stuck at all traffic lights and now all low-floor trams

Was this an additional short working to assist with cruise ship passengers? If so then these are usually operated by Southbank. I wonder when an E will run to Port Melbourne with passengers...

No. I have only seen those operating on Sundays. It was actually going to run to Box Hill, but they took it out of service and replaced it with a C

Probably the relief driver was not authorized to drive Combinos.

A1.232 ran a route 30 service earlier, but returned to the depot and was replaced with a W class

For some reason there was a Z3 (172 I think) stabled and shut down in the Showgrounds loop just after 8AM this morning.

A1s 235, 239 and 240 are running route 86 services.

An A class providing comic relief on the 96 during this morning peak.

As full as a fat lady's boot.

That was A1.236. Probably because the Combinos, C2s and Es may have had AC problems.

Z3 190 is on the Airport West 59 route today, guess its due to the heatwave and their B2's failing I suppose.
  712M Chief Commissioner

A number of B2s as well as a handful of D2s are being used on Tennis shuttles which results in smaller trams being used on some routes. The most extreme case being the 75 which normally runs exclusively with B2s is now being run by As for the two weeks.

Well I never knew the E class tram's A/C fries in the heat

A number of unusual sightings from today, most were due to the St Kilda festival

C1s on route 112: 3013, 3018, 3020, 3032, 3035
B2s on route 16a: 2004, 2064, 2065, 2079, 2096, 2120
A number of B classes on route 96a, including B1.2001, which I caught. I'll also point out that it is unusual for a B1 to be running on a weekend, regardless of which route

These were not results of the St Kilda Festival:
D2.5001 and D2.5002 were both running route 8 services earlier today.
D2.5021 was on route 16a in the morning, then I caught it on a 6d service

B class trams ran the northern half of the No. 96 route last night for the first time that I can recall since I bought my house. They shunted at Russell Street before heading north again.

At 9.30 pm I caught a B class on the No. 96 route into the city for the White Night event and while waiting for a tram home at 5.30 am I chatted to a Yarra Trams official. He confirmed that they were running the No 96 out of Preston Depot because the route was split into two by street closures. He said that the southern end of the No. 86 into Docklands was being run by Southbank depot, (presumably by either C2 or D2 trams).

Today I caught Z3.175 on a route 19 service, which is unusual any time, let alone a weekend.

A woman onboard asked me which route it was (she wanted a 57) and I told her it was a 19. Understandable mistake, she recognised the type of tram

Nobody reads destinations or route numbers. I am surprised she didn't hop aboard then finally figured it out when the tram trundled up Royal Parade.

Variety is the spice of life, and a change is good as a holiday.
