No doubt in my mind that customers do not matter in all of GSR services ,  just the mighty $$$$$$$... why don't they just say we will give back the service and let it be run by some one who knows how to run a RAILWAY ..... or are they taking a kick back  from the Airlines ????

Gee what a farce !!

NR74 was through Newcastle today, I guess BM4
AN3 looked to be in Morandoo Yard yesterday. It was a red loco and it didn't look like a NR, so this is a guess. What ever it was it would have went north on the steel train.

G'day Phower, interesting comments
For starters the service reduction is only during the Top End's Wet Season (the tourist 'low season")

"why don't they just say we will give back the service and let it be run by some one who knows how to run a RAILWAY "
Give it back to whom?
The last crowd that ran the Ghan, IP and Overland couldn't get rid of it quick enough! They ran it into the ground, they didn't want it.
{Also remember that the previous crowd only ran the Ghan to Alice Springs as it was the "End of the Line" back then}

"or are they taking a kick back  from the Airlines ????
Have you noticed the current offerings from GSR?
"Free" air fares for the return journey on the Ghan or IP (Yes, included in the price of the train ticket), Seems the airlines are the ones taking the "Kick Back"

and finally "Gee what a farce !!"
Maybe the farce is that the Australian travelling (read Holidaying) public are NOT supporting the local product

well who knows who wants to take it over... but GSR is not doing a very good job and as you quite rightly say ,  the last crowd  wanted to get rid of it fast ... Now with good loads  and less freqency all it will do is flop!!!

Well they have to do some thing , why not have a look at the O'seas rail journey's and see how they run ??

and finally "Gee what a farce !!"
Maybe the farce is that the Australian travelling (read Holidaying) public are NOT supporting the local product  reason is "cost"and
the price one pays for a stubbie or sandwich  is like a weeks wages (tongue in cheek)  even the meals are a bit of a shock  in the RED class!! thats why  no body travels  on it , staff is another  or lack of them .

Stalker can go north of Adelaide all she likes, she won't find me. Different story is she starts trapping up and down the east coast like 74 has been over the last few months.

Two points of interest this week

2. Three full (minus 1 spot) motorail carriages, but included where a couple of brand new, unregistered, Toyota FJ Cruisers.

Hi Pressman,

Is there any chance of the odd photo to accompany your regular and welcome reports on the Ghan? Perhaps from different places around APT?

Cheers

G'day Martyn, I haven't bothered much with online photos since fotopic died, but I'll see if I can't set up another account somewhere.
After all, it is a tad far away from you Wink

G'day Pressman,

Too right and too far! I am constantly thinking about a return trip to my favourite country but I always seem to have too much  work to do here in the UK. Have to make do with my own photos and movies, and Railpage!

When I did my Ghan trip in early 2009 they had just cut down the frequency of the Ghan and the IP due to the recession and I was not able to fit both trips in in the time available, which was my original plan. I did do Adelaide-Melbourne-Sydney, although the Melbourne-Albury leg was by bus due to track rebuilding.

Cheers

Martyn

Yeah I saw the photo. Would make sense to repaint it given the ANs are no longer captive to Intermodal services and ANs in particular are now banned on the Darwin track (or at least it's highly undesirable).

Won't be surprised if AN3 does reappear in PN stars livery.

Luckily I managed to film AN3 leading 1WX2 on November 8 last year, I'll post a video of it when I get time.

For the record, AN3 went to PA 13 days ago on 1WX2.
