    Disappointment again from my QLD application for expression of interest for Trainee Loco Driver positions. I've heard Aurizon has been making train drivers redundant, but why would they if they are looking for trainees and experienced loco drivers.

    If you are referring to recent news of redundancies at Aurizon "simplifying management layers" tells me that these job cuts will come from management areas. In terms of operations they are looking to find $130 million in savings including "train consist design, energy consumption, improved operating discipline and new technology" frontline operational jobs doesn't get a mention...unless I'm misreading the whole thing.

    Yes a quite a number of drivers took VER packages........some of these were health failures too. Interestingly a number of these drivers are now back as casuals.........Stick in there as manpower will come to a crisis point sooner than later......they can't continue to put off putting new trainees on.

    Does Aurizon ever offer relocation assistance for those looking at moving West. Just a curiosity type question given you always see their jobs come up on seek, and it makes me wonder why they can't attract the desired numbers over.

    In case anyone else was wondering, I was having a talk to HR, and in short the answer is possibly, it is a subject raised during the interview process and will depend on where your coming from, your skills and the quality of your application.

    I have put my hat into the ring for a position in WA, and was wondering whether the future loss of work to PN in the very near future will impact much on Merredin or Geraldton depots?

    Perhaps a question for wn514 but is Merredin still mainly DOO?

    Thanks for that wn514. Not too sure what the contract is, just heard rumblings that Perth is going to be hiring 35 new drivers to cover work that was Aurizons, as the customer has not been satisfied thus far. Lead to believe it might be to do with ore trains as it will involve the bulk side on PNR.

    it looks like the company exporting iron ore from mount Walton are going to supply their own wagons and they will contract out the hook and pull side of things. at the moment they are using aurizon locomotives and crews and hired cfcla wagons. but apparently there is a notice on the wall at west Merredin saying that aurizon have the contract until 2017. but I suppose there might be some get out clauses if it is performance based etc. but I have no inside knowledge of the contract details.

    I notice that Aurizon have just had a recruitment drive in Melb, Taree, Sydney and Brisbane. Is there a new service that they are starting up or just people jumping ship? Just seems strange for all those depots to take people all at once.

    I don't remember any jobs being advertised recently.  Do you have more details of the recruitment drive?  Are we talking just awareness or actual positions?

    In the last 3 or so months there has been the odd "Qualified Driver" job advertised for Vic, Taree, Syd, and Bris. I saw them on their website. I wouldn't have called it a "recruitment drive" as such but the ads pretty much followed one another.

    When you apply, the question is asked if you are not local (within 60 mins of depot) would you be willing to relocate? If you are keen on a driving career and you are prepared to move to NSW then answer "Yes".

    The prevailing attitude comes down to (for trainee positions)
    *More then 40 minutes away- 1 black mark
    *More then 60 minutes away - Your application is extremely uncompetitive. You would not comply with fatigue requirements

    If you are willing to move, then you application is still going to be heavily weighted down. Time and time again, companies have been burnt by those who are not local when they applied, failing to stay in the position. While it may seem like "but I am willing to move for the job", from managements eyes it also means your just as able to up roots again and leave them halfway through the traineeship.

    That's not to say that it is an automatic no, but given how competitive trainee positions are, your application has a LOT of people now ranked ahead of you.

    *EDIT: I will also stress I am speaking from a trainee perspective. Drivers with qualifications are more valuable and more lee way is appropriately given in terms of living locally or not. BUT, if your home address is say Sydney, and your applying Newcastle, a blakc mark still exists because of the fatigue issues with travelling more then 60minutes from your home depot to your home.

    Fatigue management: find new and more creative ways to screw with your job...

    The question of potential fatigue issues is always a thorny one when recruiting. Mines tend to be more active in that regard because the fixed 12 hr shift blocks most mine workers do create very unique fatigue effects that don't occur in any other type of work pattern.

    Loco driving jobs, especially in export coal, have even worse fatigue effects because the work pattern is highly variable, but being a certain distance or travel time from a location should not be used to exclude people from being potential candidates.

    Apparently Aurizon wants to take on about 50 trainees. The crew level at Mayfield depot is about 200 train crew, and the majority of them are now L4 qualified drivers or close to getting to that level. The upcoming Whitehaven coal contract will require anywhere up to another 100 train crew spread between Mayfield and the Whitehaven-specific depot at Quirindi to service the required haulage projections.

    I have the draft report here, because I cannot find where I have saved the released version BUT, you can see that with the move to the national system of rail safety laws came a review into fatigue and within that was provisions based on how far away from the depot you live.
    It is not saying that it excludes you, but in the days of merit based selection along with weighing up organisational liability, it is something that will affect your application. Perhaps not on the same scale as mandated minimum numbers for women and aboriginal participation in your workforce, but it is up there.

    The rail industry is rapidly catching up to the mine industry, how long before we need to submit a minimum number of hazard reports per shift?

    I found reading the report on fatigue management, particularly fatiguing! haha
