As advised in an earlier thread on this topic, there have been significant issues with the bridge for a number of years including:
- the local vandals using it to throw rocks on the adjoining houses in South Weston;
- concrete cancer in the bridge decking;
- severe corrosion in the structure of the bridge [ an engineer is reputed to have put a ballpeen hammer through one of the main beams while doing a condition assessment some years ago];
- insurance and public liability problems
SMR have no use for the bridge and aren't inclined to spend the money. It is believed Council paid for the extension of the bridge and the building of the ramps many years ago, but there is some doubt as to the legal responsibility for Council arising from that action, and in any case Council doesn't have the money.
While the bridge will go, consent conditions for the provision of a new road crossing into the Hunter Economic Zone adjacent to the station will include the preservation of the AA Company water tank at the developer's cost.
