It already HAS been replaced by a crossing:

The above photo taken from the crossing (safe side of course). The bridge is most definitely closed and has been for a good while, and the crossing has been there for a fair bit too. Unfortunately views such as these will no longer be possible:

Sadly it didn't take long for vandals to leave there mark on the level crossing signs  Rolling Eyes

As advised in an earlier thread on this topic, there have been significant issues with the bridge for a number of years including:
- the local vandals using it to throw rocks on the adjoining houses in South Weston;
- concrete cancer in the bridge decking;
- severe corrosion in the structure of the bridge [ an engineer is reputed to have put a ballpeen hammer through one of the main beams while doing a condition assessment some years ago];
- insurance and public liability problems

SMR have no use for the bridge and aren't inclined to spend the money. It is believed Council paid for the extension of the bridge and the building of the ramps many years ago, but there is some doubt as to the legal responsibility for Council arising from that action, and in any case Council doesn't have the money.

While the bridge will go, consent conditions for the provision of a new road crossing into the Hunter Economic Zone adjacent to the station will include the preservation of the AA Company water tank at the developer's cost.

Confirmation that the footbridge will be demolished this FY:

The South Maitland Railway pedestrian bridge at Weston is set to be demolished as part of the 2013/14 program.

The footbridge at Weston was built in 2 stages, the original section which dates from 1928 had stairs at the Station Street end and onto the platform as well as timber decking. The footbridge at this period only connected Station Street to the railway station platform. The footbridge was extended across the Hebburn Exchange sidings in 1949 due to the number of accidents caused by pedestrians being struck by trains shunting the sidings. Both ramps and the replacement of the timber decking with the current concrete slabs on the original section date from this conversion.

They should of built a replica in an area famous for its heritage.
Are the down side tracks still there?

Has their been any further developments on the bridge yet, and does the water tower still stand?
  OK2RUN Assistant Commissioner

Bridge still there (as of several days ago), water tank still in place, one water column (up side) fell down several months back.

The bridge should be repaired or a replica built to replace it. Lets say this, what happens if (knowing that it May never happen) the traffic along the line is increased, the down line is rebuilt to allow the increase in traffic, access to Weston station if passenger services are reintroduced and if RVRM ever gets to weston??????

Some things to think about.

The big problem is who will pay for the replica? And even if traffic increases on the line to the level that a footbridge may possibly be required, how do you stop people from just walking across the line anyway as they have for years short of putting up prison camp style security fencing? Especially since a road level crossing has been approved for that location for access to the HEZ (white elephant).

Work proceeded to schedule. When I drove through Weston this morning the last remnants of the ramp at the end of Station Street were being removed.
