    Could not be bothered reading this whole thread with all the posts. Word on the rails is all the Waratah cuplinks are to be replaced with Aussie BHP steel unit as the Chinese ones are showing cracks and fatigue.

    Sorry, but you could not be more wrong. They are not showing signs of cracking and fatigue, the issue is one of installation, not of materials.

    Oh and by the way, the couplers aren't even Chinese. They're manufactured by Voith GmbH in Germany. Might wanna check the credibility of your sources before you post these sort of rumours here.

    Hi piepants,

    Been lurking around here for sometime and was wondering some questions when Waratahs are stabling:

    - I recall seeing red LEDs shining between carriages on the outside at AMF, most sets there I no longer see that light (and what was it?)
    - The destos on some sets would scroll up and down with a  thick bar (maybe to stop screen burn), through observation it seems this practice doesn't occur anymore?

    - Are there any pre-programmed codes for the Destos, similar to the Tangaras? I recall seeing messages such as "Welcome to Sydney" being displayed are there any other non-rail related messages?

    Were the red LEDs on the ends of the trailer cars? If so, they are warning lights on the MPM (main power module) that indicate the presence of 1500VDC in the unit. They are now all disconnected, which would be why you no longer see them.

    The destos originally came programmed from the factory to display a scrolling "enjoy your stay in Sydney" message after initial power up, before receiving another message from eTIS. Later software updates removed this test message, but they do still have some other test messages that can be activated with a command from a laptop plugged into the TCN. I believe the scrolling bar you have seen is also one of the tests...

    Fairly sure the thick bar scrolling up and down, occurs as the guard is performing his/her train preparation.  From memory it occurs, as they are doing their walk through the train checking the PA system is working in all the carriages.  I am not 98% sure, and not 100% certain as I am not a guard.  Perhaps if a guard pipes up, they maybe able to confirm, although, they don't usually walk outside of the train during their train prep, as far as I am aware.

    Ah, I think you could be right. This sounds very much like the train certification test, though I haven't had much to do with this procedure.

    I know the PA system makes a tone during the train cert test to indicate it's working, but had no idea about the destos.

    A80 is due to be delivered to Auburn just before Easter. A06 should be heading back to Sydney soon too. That will just leave PPTV and the two Millenniums (M11 and M33) as the only passenger train cars at Cardiff.

    The "extra set" was referred to internally as A79, but it's been assigned the road numbers of A80. Not 100% sure on why, but I've guessed it's due to the two PPTV TDCs being numbered D6379 and D6479 (even though those cars will never see service again...)

    That was my thinking too - the same reasoning that the numbering from A2 couldn't be reused, must be a write-off thing?

    As from Monday, April 7, three Sector 3 Rosters have been allocated new Roster numbers, for the purpose of grouping all Rosters operated by A sets in one sequence or series.

    8K set Roster 132 has been changed to Roster number 185.
    8K set Roster 134 has been changed to Roster number 186.
    8K set Roster 137 has been changed to Roster number 187.


    These three Rosters were to have become A set Rosters from April 7, however, this has been deferred until Thursday, April 10, when the Easter Timetables start to roll.


    With the conversion of these three Rosters to A set consist, the tally is as follows:-
    Sector 3 (North & West Services) Total A set Rosters: 37
    Sector 2 (Inner West, South, Bankstown, East Hills Line Services) Total A set Rosters: 32 (maximum planned for this Sector)

    Yep, not long now. Assuming things go as planned (which hasn't really been the case for the last 3 sets), 78 should be delivered next week, with 80 happening just after Easter.

    Thanks piepants, for the great pix of A78 & A80. Love your work! Coincidentally, when passing by the factory today I grabbed a couple of slightly speed-blurred shots of the part of A78 that wasn't hidden by the shrubbery but also snapped the remains of the PPTV through the trees to try and record (totally trivially!) that the visible driving car still carries its provisional road number, D6379, printed on what seems to be part of the surviving "Train-in Test" label.

    Thanks, sydneyshortnorth. All the "train under test" decals are still on the PPTV cars, along with the original D6379 and D6479 road numbers. The motor cars, however, have had their original numbers (N5342 and N5442) covered with "MC01" and "MC02". Everything else has pretty much been stripped from PPTV.

    Slightly off topic,

    But it seems D1073 from the final M set has been refurbished?

    New Waratah style seat vandal resistant covers have been replaced over the old woven ones.

    I do have a few questions and it would be great if anyone (especially piepants) can answer:

    - Are the seat covers on M sets and Waratahs directly interchangeable?
    - The light housings on Millenniums, Oscars and Waratahs all seem to be of the same construction (being built in between the air conditioning vents). I believe the light housing fixture is manufactured by the same company in Australia (RPC Technologies), see here [url=http://rpctechnologies.com/our_sectors/transport/passenger_light_rail/lighting]http://rpctechnologies.com/our_sectors/transport/passenger_light_rail/lighting

    8 Torx screws are used to mount one light housing for a Waratah and Millennium (through observation), these seem to be located in fairly similar locations would it even be remotely possible (aside cost) to have Millenniums refurbished with the Waratah LED units? They would obviously last longer and are brighter compared to the yellowing fluorescent tubes on the M sets?

    Alco 4473 went solo through Flemington on the Goods Line at about 11.30am today and I'm guessing it's gone North to pick up Waratah A78 in Cardiff for delivery to Auburn this evening. Does anyone know (piepants perhaps?) if there's likely to be any special commemorative send-off for the final set, A80, when it leaves the Cardiff yard after Easter?

    Nah, not that I know of. The majority of workers on the Waratah project have already left Downer. Those of us left in the test and commissioning crew had a group photo with A80, but that was about it.
