    An article in the "Country News" supplement to todays Shepparton News says Graincorp and district grain growers are calling for the re-opening of the Dookie line. Graincorp want to spend money upgrading the site but want to use rail to export grain.

    Sites that also still load include

    Tocumwal, Donald, Litchfield, Kinnabulla, Birchip, Woomelang, Speed, Tempy, Ultima, Woorinen, Murrayville,
    Plenty on the Sea lake and Manang tracks also.

    A good give away is if the loading chutes have white safety cages around them. Ohs states they are required.

    Sounds like a good idea. Why was this line allowed to sit there and rot anyhow?

    I am aware this is not the first request for access made to Vline/Victrack since the line was disconnected from the junction near Shepparton.

    The points to the dookie line are still intact, master key locked and could be used tomorrow. Track obviously needs work vegetation is wild.

    The mainline turnout was replaced a few years ago as part of a track rationalisation project.

    The track through a level crossing needs renewing, as the rails have been pulled out of the road, due to poor road surface.

    Rationalisation to what end?  Eventually Victoria if they are not already there will have a network which does not provide any useful purpose to an operator?

    Was this linked to the pulling up of Shepparton yard?

    This line will never re-open and that's it.
    As informed many years ago when I was running on this line by graham at Shepparton, the government were more than happy to open line as long as the operators timetable to use it.
    As a taxpayer how would you feel the gov spends $20 million to open the line and gets used ad hoc plus maintenance costs. Look how many trains would be needed just to break even and its something the public will never see. Yes there may be more trucks on the roads which are probably owned by local operators.
    It should stay closed not enough traffic. Look at the drama we are having trying to keep lines open that have many more sites to service. Please we couldn't even make a case to open Eaglehawk to Inglewood when the line was closed at Arnold.
    Its the sad truth and we have to live with it.

    What crossing are you talking about Nightfire?

    I went through there not long ago and I could swear the rails and points where in place.

    I will pay extra close attention next time.

    I agree with onelongwhistle
    It will never re open.

    The crossing was discussed a few years ago on this forum.

    The sleepers under the road had been eaten by white ants or something and the road surface had fallen apart, so one rail had been pulled out of the broken pavement and the road surface patched up.

    The Is near the Rosella factory.

    The former Dookie line junction was at the Midland Highway next to the SPC factory, but was moved to near the actual veer off, where the fuel terminal Is (still has sidings) a few km's North, eliminating the need for two parreral tracks, the disused SPC sidings got disconnected at the same time.

    To maintain a road does vicroads want a Commitment for  while registrations to justify maintenance.

    People on this site some on which just do not get it. Woodford could be right.

    It costs 3 times the amount to fix road damage than maintain a rail line for grain.

    It is also cheaper to use rail for grain than road.

    This is why graincorp want to use a liberal should already be available for traffic.

    What is stopping graincorp from running trains to dookie now ?

    It makes me wonder if it would be better if VicRoads was merged with VicTrack, with the more cost effective (i.e rail) option given priority.

    Merging bureaucracies won't change much. What needs to change is funding - local councils should be able to re-allocate federal roads funding to rail rehabilitation funding if it's more cost-effective for them. If the grain handlers and local councils want to re-open a line and have the funding to cover most of the re-opening costs, it might actually make sense for VicTrack/Vline.

    take a look at south australia if you would like to view a model which has not worked. roads falling apart and rail lines rusting. gwa no plans to further develop the freight market for grain.

    maybe that is why victoria and south australia are refered to as the rust belt.

    why can;t trains access the dookie line now as was asked?

    And South Australia has an ALP state government....

    Roads are considered (by Govt and the public) as indispensable, but rail lines are considered disposable - even those which are ultimately cost effective.  That's been the attitude of various governments of all political persuasion for the past 50+ years.
