Southern Cross pl. 2a & b to 8a & b (and even 8south + 8a I guess) would be long enough for 9 carriages if both sections of each platform are used.

Not 8 south + 8 a, as 8 south is slightly further west than 8a.

Every morning this week on my way to work (about 5 am) I have noted that there is some serious work being done on the Ballarat line at Deer Park West Junction (not the new RRL junction, but the old junction to the Boral Quarry siding, where the dual track becomes single track). Is someone able to confirm that this is for the installation of a new set of high speed points to replace the old 65km/h points? Or is it something else entirely?

Gee, I thought the 'Govmint' had forgotten about that one.

So I guess this means that we users of the Ballarat line will still have to put up with all up trains having to slow down to 65km/h in the middle of nowhere for the long haul then? Hardly surprising if so.

Hi all,

Ballarat Line -

I was trying to spot trackwork from the road coach travelling over the deer park west junction, it appears as the if the 65kph turnout for up trains from Ballarat is no more and a new one has been put in.

Also the track coming out of the boral siding has changed as well.

Can anyone confirm? It's hard to see out of a bus doing 100kph on the Deer Park Bypass.

Thank-you for posting those photos- it's hard to tell what they are modifying about that junction?  They've certainly removed a lot of the main line for whatever it is they're doing.
The last time I noticed that spur line from the train I wondered how on earth they got trains down there - it looks to be in really poor condition.

Looks like a piece of PECO track.  Good photos...........

is that a branch running from the almost top of the last image around kind of behind the mound or small hill?

Yes, it leads to the Boral quarry where ballast is loaded.
Edit: and clearly they don't waste any ballast on their own line!

I guess this will be reconnected when the new points are established?

Sorry if this ha been asked before but have is the new junction west or east on the new points and west or east of the boral  junction ?

I cannot find the boral siding signal in the image. Has it been abolished ?

I took these photos just days after the Christies Road bridge opened.
The first one shows the track to Boral Siding and it makes me wonder about that big pile of dirt on the right in the more recent photos.
The second one was taken from Deer Park Bypass wihch is about 600m away from Christies Road.

I know the long lens shortens everything a lot (especially compared to the first shot), but wow it looks like a roller coaster ride in that last photo...

It's a few Km in that pic to the horizon and at 160 KPH speeds pax don't notice any 'roller-coaster' effect as there is none.

Absolutely, that's the telephoto lens making it look like that.

And thanks for the photos, I wizzed past at 100km/h Monday morning so I didn't get a good chance to see what was going on - looked like a hive of activity!

Interesting there's nothing about it anywhere, although wait until it gets a bit closer to being completed, no doubt just in time for the election, how convenient... Too bad the area has been Labor for as long as I've been alive, if not longer! Laughing

I didn't use a fancy lens or zoom for any of those photos.
The first one is unmodified, the next two have lost a little bit on the sides and quite a bit top and bottom, only the last one has been heavily cropped.

They've put the track back at Caroline Springs, I can't tell if the points are new, and I'm not sure what work has been done to prepare the station site other than the dirt which has been delivered.

See pictures on the XPT Derailment thread of the XPT that has derailed this morning on the Dynon side of the North Melbourne flyover across the new junctions with the RRL line. Not a great look on new tracks that were supposed to open next week.

Coming back from Stawell yesterday afternoon saw a light engine N class stopped at the site of the new station.
Hard to see what it was doing as I was driving on the highway.

Assuming that is the site of the new station, maybe they have raised the track a little, making sure that the grade will be constant through the new platform, rehabilitated the base etc.

The photos above seem to indicate the boral siding will branch on the up side of the new station

How many platforms will be installed for the new station ?

If 2 then has enough room been made available and where will the new points be installed ?

Do these new stations include Myki machines and security cameras and other facilities like both buttons you press to inform you of the next trains ?
