A couple of weeks ago I reported on pedestrians risking all in trying to beat the boom gates at Wynnum Central.

Saw it again this morning - twice, and both times elderly ladies who should know better. My guess the closeness of the shopping centre sees people leaving things to the last minute, but certainly no excuse. However this time 2 Railway Police were waiting.

Both ladies loaded with shopping were not allowed to board their trains while being fined. The two trains are only a few minutes apart.

The first lady had a minor revenge. While she was being fined she saw the second lady doing the same as the Police had their backs turned at the time. She told the Police and so while she was being fined the second Officer got the second lady.

Two wrongs don't make a right...  Razz

But that is quite funny, Phil.

It seems to be all ages, from 10 onward, they all do it, not just at crossings, but trespassers too.  Just Why!?

Cleveland line closed this weekend for track work.  Saturday 2478+2491 went through Wynnum North at 0300, to return at about 1730.  Sunday morning another consist went through at 0615, but I didn't get up quickly enough to see the locos, so am guessing they were the same as the day before.

During a shower I just observed a 6 car EMU unit ( not IMU ) bound for Shorncliffe at 0710 slide through Wynnum North station by about 2 cars. The driver then backed the train into the platform. The rear set was numbered 20. I have sometimes heard brakes on other EMU's momentarily lock up in wet weather but manage to stop OK.

Not surprised. Was the first decent bit of rain in awhile which makes the rails slippery, AND trainee drivers were out today (though not necessarily on that service).

SMU 200/220 series are very prone to the brakes shuddering when stopping in wet conditions I've noticed.

This new timetable is pretty tight.  There is only 1 minute for UP trains between Wynnum North and Wynnum but 2 minutes for DOWN trains.  I also note in the afternoon peak the 4 expresses seem to be express in name only, as every day at least 3 of these 4 services are on yellow or red lights from as far out as Lindum.  Some services stop at Wynnum North with closed doors.  This is obviously a log jam at Manly.  It is a big ask for all these services to converge onto a single track after Manly, noting as well the return services from Cleveland.  Granted 4 services terminate at Manly, but it takes time for a service to arrive at Manly, the driver to change ends and clear the platform for the next service to arrive.

Big problems on Cleveland line this morning so far.  First inbound train of day at 0504 held at Wynnum North for 30 minutes and finally released at 0534.  However as this is being typed at 0600 no trains in either direction have come through, including 3 empty Cleveland bound services to help run the morning peak.

At 0800 still big problems at Wynnum North with many services appearing to be cancelled this side of Hemmant/Murarrie. Although some services are running in the peak, most are still being held at Wynnum North and are packed. Station PA system advising the normal expresses are now running All Stations.

For the second consecutive morning problems on the Cleveland line. At least this time it is on a Saturday. City bound 0702 service at Wynnum North was running 8 mins late and entered station very slowly, and here it has stayed. Pax have detrained and are getting taxis. And again no services from City either

That would seem unlikely. There are no ELs that far south...

It was MMY004. It's actually a diesel-powered vehicle that does track geometry and overhead line equipment recording.

Thanks mb67 I was obviously mistaken.  It was quietly drifting through Wynnum North quietly and I heard the unusual whistle and by the time I got outside to have a look it was heading round the bend to Lindum and all I caught was one end and the panto and it looked like an EL from a distance.  Probably a flashback to 25 years ago when before full electrification happened here, some services were a 3900 + SX set.

I mentioned earlier the piling of concrete sleepers and changing of speed boards suggesting work to be commenced soon.  QR dropped a note in the letterbox yesterday advising the shutdown over the 13/16 June, so there will be DEL action right outside my door, most likely back to back 2470's.

I remember sitting in the backyard in the mornings when we lived at Lota seeing the EL's and SX sets going past. Wouldn't blame anyone for mistaking it.

Shut down of Cleveland line from Murarrie onwards this weekend, including work described in my last post.  Spoils train led by 2500D/2411D passed through Wynnum North on the wrong road at 2145 Saturday, presumably to Manly to allow locos to run round.  Train returned through Wynnum North at 0645 Sunday.  Between Wynnum North and Wynnum on the up line  wooden sleepers replaced with concrete but using existing rails.  I noted dates on the rails of 1980 and 1978.

And at Cleveland, they have inserted one of the new buffers on the Up platform along with new OHLE masts. Guessing it's to make it even with the otherside after the collision, and probably the new ones are better than the old giant concrete blocks. They pulled the track up from about 2 metres from the station end of the platform and put down new rail and sleepers for it.

Saw that when coming home. When we arrived at Hemmant we were stopped for a few minutes and I was sitting next to the guard and heard the control radio going off with control issuing SW50's to pass the signal at red. Departing Hemmant saw the train reduced to 50% track speed and then stop before the crossing, and crossing at 5kph as per the new procedure which allows movement across level crossings when protection has failed. Rail Operations Response Unit and QPS and QFRS were on-site fairly quickly.

Those concrete blocks were said to be strong enough to stop a train...  They go 14 feet (ish) down...  When the Cleveland incident happened, it was snapped in two, granted, at ground level.  The incident shows that no engineer really knows how something will handle stress until something really happens, despite all the testing that goes on.

These new stop-blocks are much better, they slow the train down first by allowing some slide over the rail.

Strange workings this morning on the Cleveland Line. Normally all is quiet in the early hours of a Sunday through Wynnum North, but this morning - 6, yes 6 empty sets have run through to Cleveland, and 2 empty sets have run through to the City - all between 0500 and 0610. There are usually a few empty runnings on weekdays but this morning is out of the box. Also a service with a desto of Bowen Hills just stopped at Wynnum North - 20 minutes before the first scheduled train. All early City bound trains on a Sunday go to Shorncliffe.

And just as I posted this yet another empty, the 7th, just ran through Cleveland bound - all since 0500.

Only 3 minutes after the final suburban run for the night a short ballast train following ran through Wynnum North led by 24XX+23XX at 0027.  The still loaded train returned on the down line passing here at 0113 with the 23 leading, most likely running round at Manly.  I recognized the 23 by its unique sound and the distinctive 2300 whistle.  We have only been here 15 months and have not seen a 23 before  ( other than Port line of course ) running these suburban maintenance trains, only being twin 24's previously.  It would be interesting to know where this ballast was to be laid.

Various amounts of ballast were unloaded between Wynnum Central and Buranda on the Down line that morning.

With regards to rollingstock used, the yardmasters only request 2x 90t DEL's back to back. I guess Queensland Rail must've had a 2300 class transferred into their hands from Aurizon (they've had a few 2400's brought back over). That night there were only 6x VBO's and the plough.
