    Glenfield via Granville services will continue to Leppington.

    If that's correct, then:
    1) blows theory about relevance (sense) of turnout speeds,
    2) turnbacks on P3 would cease, but
    3) people coming from the direction of Granville would still have to change trains at Glenfield if heading for stations Macquarie Fields to Macarther.

    While turnbacks are operating, station announcements at prior stations (like Liverpool for example) should advise passengers to 'Catch this train and cross platform at Glenfield for Campbelltown services.' People generally would have ignored Glenfield terminators in earlier times due to need of climbing/shoving up stairs to another platform, but this is (now) not necessary.

    Who said it was an assumption? An assertion perhaps? Anyone who exposes their credentials to support an assertion they make here could likely jeopardise their employment AFAIR of CityRail policy, and Sydney Trains isn't likely to be more tolerant. Better and safer to refer to documents in the public domain.

    Actually, the policy states that an employee is to make no comment at all.

    However, given the situation, I made an assertion. Thus, I asked why an assumption was made.

    It's actually quite common knowledge in the railways that the timetable will be re-worked and Leppington services will extend from Glenfield via Granville. A shuttle service was also on the table.

    No assumptions or assertions, it is quite common knowledge within transport that there is no direct service to the city on the SWRL, I just wouldn't want to raise the hopes of the good folk of this forum that there would be anything other than the latter option that you believe to have been discounted.

    I understand there is not way of proving this until the announcement, but I am right on this, trust me.

    The (near) future will tell. While a shuttle between Leppington and Glenfield would get users from the south-west on the move, extending the service slightly to say Liverpool would also simplify access to the Bankstown line, or to Granville for easier access to western line services without incurring extra changes of trains. It would clearly depend on wether such stations are set up for turnbacks and time slots available at the appropriate platforms; during off-peak a shuttle could be limited to Leppington-Glenfield to minimise duplicate services.

    Three weeks from today all the infrastructure of both projects will be complete and the ball passes to Sydney Trains to score the points. (Seemed a topical allusion at the moment.)

    A quick trip to Holsworthy today revealed suitably scaled sleeper and new rail stockpiles forming adjacent to the NFO, ready for the final step in the G.T.I. project, now due in a little under two weeks time. About a dozen saw cuts would be a prelude to some ungraceful track removal, but it is uncertain if the long 'straight' replacing 40/41/42 points will be prefab'ed as a track module or just assembled on-site piece by piece. If prefab'ed, then work assembling it could begin 'now', but would make for a largish module to handle. If earthworks are minimal, such 'haste' may not be needed. About a dozen track welds to glue the DN and UP Main's back together, some extra ballast and a final tamping of the new tracks and this will about bring the curtain down on the G.T.I. project.

    There is no ability at Glenfield for trains from Leppington to return back to Leppington from the platform. The plan is to run trains to Liverpool, where they can return off the platform.

    If an ex-Leppington train arrives in P2, the Up starter for P2 has provision for Shunt Ahead, which allows the train to pull ahead then set back into P3 using the 56 trailing crossover. Ground signal GD15 authorises the setback into P3. Once in P3, GD23 controls the start and pts60 allows access to the Leppington Dn ramp. Back in September I observed MTPV1 do this exact same movement.

    Edit: Which is not to mean they WON'T continue to Liverpool for a turnback; I suggested as much in a recent post that such a move would save GLRL customers a change-of-trains just to get to the Bankstown and Regent's Park services.

    Watching from inside the train yesterday the platform at Glenfield during the big downpour. Some really bad drainage problems there. There are tiny little holes for the water to drain into, and the platform slopes down from the city end. The water just totally missed the drains and kept going down the platform towards the country end. Huge pools of water right in front of the steps several centimetres deep most of the time.  Nothing they can do about it now unfortunately.

    It probably wouldn't hurt if someone checked if the platform drains actually work - a 'maintenance' task usually missed even by home owners.

    Perhaps larger water capture gratings are needed; the present ones seem appropriate for a station assistant hosing down the platform.

    Sat Oct 18: By a little after noon, 40 crossover and 41 points had gone and work advancing on removal of 42 crossover. Lots of orange jackets everywhere, working on OHW both sides of Glenfield, mast removal, station wiring, drains (non-platform), removing concrete bases,... Sunday will most likely see the track back in place.

    Sun Oct 19: By 10.30am both Down and Up tracks were already available for the ballast train. 8149 had the lead on the Down pass and 8163 was lead on the Up pass, and by 1.30pm 3 track tampers were working in the area. Crews were also completing the last of the 1500v cross-feeds for the Leppington Down/Up ramps, as others appeared to be rechecking contact wire heights in the entire area; even the original brick signal control building got a roof upgrade. With 12 hours still to run on the closedown, it looked to be an easy coast to the finish line.

    Has someone saved an 'S' set for training purposes?

    S Set supply shouldn't be a problem as they've got plenty of sets in warm storage at Enfield. Whether they'll take it out of Enfield is another matter as just the other day there were at least 3/4 extra 8-car S Sets running around in place of others. There are a few S Sets still around, just not necessarily used day-in and day-out.

    AMF being Auburn Maintenance Facility. There is normally a 4S floating around in there somewhere for crew training purposes.

    The SWRL will be commissioned as of 2am today (being... 32 mins away). Monday 20th October 2014.

    I believe, and I'm not 100% on this - the first train is scheduled to run on the night of the 23rd.

    AMF was once more notable in 10-pin bowling circles. How things change.

    Stuck it out at Glenfield Cambridge Ave. bridge to about 1.30pm; shame health precluded staying to the close. 5+ years work finally comes to an end.

    That makes better sense, given the 'official' handover of the 'SWRL project' to Sydney Trains is set for Oct 31. The line might now be 'live' but Sydney Trains logically couldn't use it until they've been officially given it.

    There was a highrail lift sitting on the southern flyover this morning, suggesting they were looking at the OHW or signals at some point recently. Maybe that is the cause of the delay.

    Also, following on from my comments above about drainage, with the weekend shutdown last week, the drain closest to the city-emd stairs on P3/4 has been elongated from a small square (approx 20cm square) to a long trench drain like you would find in a shower. Looks to be about 1.5m long now. should help that situation a lot.

    There was certainly a lot of attention given to the OHW during the last closedown; was the vehicle actually on the rails or just on spare space at the top? I imagine the catenary wire might sag a little after installing, causing the contact wire to drop, thus requiring a recheck of height.

    Handover is not October 31. The line is Sydney Trains' as of Monday, all handover documentation has been completed.
