Lambie has resigned from the Palmer united party. PUP as many rail pagers predicted is starting to fall apart.

PUP's senate number decreases, but the overall IQ of the party's upper house membership has increased. Lambie won't last on her own or with her own party beyond her term, not even Tasmania is dumb enough to fall for that.

It only needs a swap of two letters for an appropriate change of spelling - Palmer Untied Party.

Senators should not be allowed to resign from parties and keep their seats. I vote for people in the senate, but the VAST majority of voters vote for parties. If a senator was to resign from parliament or pass away their seat would be filled by the party. I don't see why someone can claim to be a member of a party, collect party votes, then later change the colour of their guernsey and have that be all above board.

Agreed. Palmer's cash and PUP volunteers got Jacquie Lambie elected to the Senate and without that support she would not have got past the line. Decency demands that she stands aside and a PUP nominee takes her place.
She is quite within her rights to stand as an independent next time around, but I don't believe she has the smarts to stand on her own.

I'll agree with Aaron and gippslander. If a person is elected as part of a party, resigning from the party should automatically entail resigning from the parliament. It borders on false pretences to stay on.

Gets back to what people have voted for. Do they vote for a person to represent them or a party representative?
Certainly the PUP should be entitled to get back whatever they invested in her. Make it pro-rata Wink

Do not agree.  It ought to be the responsibility of the parties to vet their candidates properly before endorsing them.

Don't want your candidate to go rogue after being elected? Try selecting a team player instead of a maniac who was too hot for even the military police to handle, and who had previous political involvement with two other political parties.

How can you check past political involvement? The candidate will probably deny previous connections even if asked and previous parties probably ought not give out names of previous members...

If you vote for a person it has realistically to be an Independent. If you vote for a party member, you get the party line and the party vote. Remember Iolanthe's Private Willis?
"When, in that house, MP's divide,
If they've a brain and cerebellum too;
They have to leave that brain outside,
And vote just as their leaders tell 'em to."

So should she compensate Clive? Or should Clive get a slap across the head for having her run for him in the first place?

BTW, I've just realized that as of yesterday, I have been a member on Railpage for 10 years.
