The NSW government has delayed the procurement process for its proposed $2.8 billion order of 65 new intercity trains to run between central Sydney, the Central Coast and Hunter, and the south coast and Blue Mountains.

The delay comes amid industry speculation Transport for NSW might find it difficult to achieve its stated goal of buying the new trains "off the shelf".

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian had said the government would shortlist potential train manufacturers by the end of the year and issue more detailed tender specifications.
