Hi everyone
A worksite  has appeared on the down side of St Albans station in the last week This is the first evidence of the Grade Separation project getting underway . According to Vic Roads the project is due for completion February 2016 & there will be one month closure of St Albans station after Christmas 2015 to facilitate the final works . This will be complex project in a relatively confined ( & Very busy area ) I thought it may warrant a thread of it`s own . what do others think ? www1.vicroads.vic.gov/planning-and-projects Please see link to Vic Roads website.

I'm guessing the project will be simular to Springvale Road / Springvale Station ?

A new railway trench will be cut through just West of the current running lines.

From the page:

The project includes:
  • Lowering the rail line below Main Road
  • A new premium train station below ground with the entrance at street level
  • Bus interchanges next to the new station
  • Relocating the station car park, maintaining the existing number of spaces
  • A new pedestrian overpass to replace the existing crossing at Ruth Street

The plan is for the rail line to be sunken. The same is planned for the Glenroy Level Crossing.

I heard in passing that the station will be East of the current line and 'cut the corner' of the current radius. The shops north east of the level crossing will be demolished.

Also ,St Albans has two stabling sidings in daily use .
These trains will be relocated to the new sidings to be built at Calder Park .
The sidings will need to be removed before the rail line can be diverted .

If I recall correctly the new sidings are now complete, so I expect St Albans siding removal to being shortly if it hasn't already.

With the stabling sidings being abolished, will the crossover be retained for emergency terminations?

Are you saying the new sidings and yard at Calder Park is already complete?

Also Calder Park seems a strange place to put the sidings.  Not much out there?

That's why they're putting sidings in at Calder Park - land is cheap. It's the same reason why Metro has been building huge maintenance facilities near the termini of their railway lines in the outer suburbs such as Epping, Craigieburn, Pakenham East (eventually) and Baxter (eventually).

Both  St Albans sidings still in use as of today .
Work seems to be concentrating on underground services at present

It'd be nice if they did the Furlong Road LX at the same time, but it won't be as easy as Rooks Road since Ginifer station is too close to the crossing to just raise or lower the tracks.

@bevans the Stage 1 sidings are. Not sure if there are any sidings planned for Stage 2 though.

Has any thought been given to wiring part of Tottenham yard for spark stabling ?

Easier to get trains quickly into and out of the inner city from there.

Also suggest part of the yard go over to SG for freight to relieve congestion at Appleton Dock.

A lot of capacity at Tottenham yard which could be used more than it is now.

Is there still space available at Newport for expansion ?

What exactly is involved with Stage 1? Where are these sidings located?

They are around the Calder Raceway/service station area. I believe there are six sidings, a carpark, and driver facilities.

I will be interested to see where between Ginifer and St Albans stations the Line lowering begins there is a slight rising grade in this section.
Also , There is no indication of work beginning at Furlong road at this time . This would cause SEVERE traffic chaos if it was attempted at the same time .

Complete...right down to the flash, you beaut white LED's which illuminate the whole siding precinct from the overhead wires.

They were opened before Christmas.

Just a couple of quick observations of late:
- Lot's of fencing either side of St Alban's station has been put up on the Western side of the tracks.  Fencing to the NW extends a considerable distance towards Keilor Plains Station.
- New Calder Park siding and stabling yard had a Metro T-Class diesel and a rake of wagons there this morning.

Work is continuing
Of interest some Aboriginal artifacts have been found  ( Stone tool remnants ) within the work site . They have been removed for safe keeping until the project is complete and will be returned to site then . The local custodians are aware of this and it is not holding up ongoing work .

What is with the large pool of what looks like vomit at the up end of the sidings?
