Anybody have any idea as to what is in them?

I am thinking of doing one of these services before they disappear (probably The Westlander, I did a run out to Quilpie back in 1988), and am just wondering what to expect if I do it.

You'll find significant changes if you haven't travelled the Western line in over 25 years...then again, some things will be almost unchanged.

Meal boxes...took me 5 seconds to look this one up, read the below brochure....unless of course you were looking to create a general discussion about the Westlander...

The LNP did not ever announce the closure of these services though I suspect they would have liked to. For what reasons we will probably never know.

I would say that rail is safer under the ALP but they have already been responsible for the breakup of QR and we have seen a lot of freight up here go to road which will cost the state even more in terms of cost and environmental damage in the end.

It is really hard to tell though given the margin they have won by and the who the balance of power sits with i doubt they will be removed.

While we will never know what the former ALP would have done had they remained in Govt, I believe most would have expected they would have cancelled these trains outright. Why? Because they bought new hardware to replace the aging Sunlander and there was sufficient sleepers remaining to service the SOTO but nothing for the Westie/Inlander. Basically the path was in motion for closure, only if is would they have gone seater only as well?

As NSWGR8022, I think it surprised most that the Westie/Inlander were kept alive by LNP as seater only. Probably because of the National portion of the govt.

Under previous ALP, more branch lines and more freight was placed on road than ever before. Including the freight that used to be part of the Westie and Inlander, cancellation of the general freight trains on the GNR, Bilo line (which was later removed), Toowoomba containers, general freights to Qulpie, Cunumalla, Yaraka/Blackall, Blackall cattle, Bundy freight, Hug-Winton general freight, Sth/SW grain to road, Sth line apples, Ethanol to Mackay, last ICE service to Rocky on Sat PM.........

If you believe the change of govt will save the Westie and Inlander then you need to look at some history. I think its a fair bet the two trains are unlikely to survive until the next election or even 2015.

If the Katter Australia Party forms part of the upcoming minority government then the Inlander is very likely to survive - it runs almost exclusively through both Katter Australia seats and now originates in the Townsville ALP seats largely won from the LNP on the back of the proposed sale of the Mt Isa line and perceived/real political indifference from Brisbane. It would be a very unneccesary political crisis to scrap it before the next election.

A MBS/C is still being used on the Inlander at the moment.

and when the CM publishes an article of a Journo (tipped off by an ALP source to help get public support) riding the train with less people than staff......

As per historic closures in return for axing the train the locals will be bribed with a new layer of bitumen in the town or hwy or something else.

QR has just begun advertising for drivers at its current and future Traveltrain depots including Roma (Westlander), Emerald (Spirit of the Tropics), Townsville and Cloncurry (Inlander)

One box for a snack, two boxes for a meal. Add your own bubbly.

I'm starting to think it has become like the final Yaraka lander. BYO everything.

It could be just me but I wouldn't get too excited about this yet, especially Roma/Clon. QR are under instruction to run the service until told otherwise. They also had drivers stationed on the Monto loop for how long after last regular service and even many years prior with barely a train a week. The Monto track work depo looked like it cost more than the railway line.

If I was a train driver and pushing for a payout within next 5 years, I'd go tomorrow!
