Developing code for this project is a large planning and writing exercise. The only way I can see this getting of the ground is when the code here is stable and other projects have been completed.
By way of this idea I believe the best way to approach the idea would be to setup a camera overlook a stop in a suburb where car traffic and pedestrian traffic would bot set off the camera. This is tricky to get right.
Once you have the camera connected and data/images are flowing these could be placed into the DAMS. However to really make this work well it would benefit the project if the tram ID could be connected with the location of the camera.
Let me explain. To have any real value you would want to create a digital database of the various trams on the network. To do this we would need to identify the tram as it transited the location of the camera, store the image and the date and time and tram type and number. Then you would have sightings of each tram type and the date and time and location in which it was taken.
You could also list the tram types and id's through a specific location using a similar concept under development here: http://www.railpage.com.au/timetables
which are are still to complete in terms of data. Yarra Trams do make it a little easier than ARTC.
We do not have a tram database but one could be built. To do this Michael would need some coding assistance as we have a lot on already.
Any interesting project but I don't believe Michael and I could fund this over and above the other projects we have coming down the pipeline. I do like the idea however.
I am prepared if someone provides some funding and a location to setup a camera and capture some images if you would like to do this.
