Freight rail movement ahead

News article: Freight rail movement ahead

THE state opposition wants the Andrews government to make sure the sale of Rural Finance goes solely towards projects benefiting regional Victoria, particularly the Murray Basin Rail Project.

The Murray Basin Rail Project includes modernising the capacity of the Mildura line, maintain access to intermodal terminals at Donald and Merbein and enable bulk transport of grain to Melbourne and Geelong from the state's north and northwest.

Typical Victoria.  Let's descope all but what is there.  Let's not go back to industry and look to establishing further Intermodal hubs on the line and encourage another operator and business into Redcliffs.  Completely lack innovation.

This is a one in a generation opportunity to get the entire North West ready for SG and building the rail business,  Nope, let's descale and give them just what we think.

Perfect example to what has been discussed on Railpage over the past week.

Standardization of the remaining Victorian network must happen.

I am not sure it will bring a big lift in growth of traffic.  Portland has been Sg for a while now and no operator has moved in to shift any intermodal which was once on rail until it was killed off by PN.

The benefits of Mildura standardisation have been covered ad nauseum elsewhere on the 'Page. Doesn't bring about an increase it traffic per se, but it enables more competition and encourages development of new traffic.

My point is this has not happened for Portland.

Australia would be better with a few smaller operators who are prepared to work hard for their customers and do the smaller jobs across the network and industry.

It didn't happen for Portland because rail access from the relevant freight commodities isn't there (grain from the NW grain branchlines, woodchips/lumber from the Mt Gambier/Penola 'green triangle'). Portland is also a bulk-freight only port - no intermodal facilities.

As for 'smaller rail operators' - on standard gauge there are a few! SSR, QUBE, SCT, Espee...
