Murray Basin standardisation

  Z VAN Locomotive Driver

Great news to Me that the Government is going to Standardise the lines in the Murray Basin area.
I can see by the many previous posts there is room for improvement and maybe in the future there can be improvements.
I was Happily surprised to see the Murrayville line included and let us face it the outcome is far superior to what many of Us were thinking and hoping for.
From my far away view this is a fantastic outcome and far from what I thought the review may have come up with.
Let us get this section gauge converted then start lobbying for more lines to be gauge converted.
Faults and all this is a fantastic outcome for Rail.

Sounds like absolute rubbish from Warren Truss right there. The Mildura line got federal AusLink funding from the Howard government roughly a decade ago, so the tracks not being ARTC leased/owned isn't the issue (not that the Feds fund the ARTC much these days anyhow).

Warren's just throwing his weight around for the usual reasons.

$80m was spent on the line in a major upgrade. What did this upgrade really deliver ?

Trains were still derailing.

Vic says it will happen without Federal funding, so not sure its something to be overly worried about.

I had a good talk with the crews doing the upgrade (Note 1), they said the line was in an EXTREMELY poor state, The money allocated being insufficient amount to bring the line up to a truely good state.

ie same old problem, insufficient maintence funds being allocated over time.

Note 1: The same team that did the Mildura line did the NE regauge, I talked to some of them after they returned to the NE project. It was a real interesting conversation, I may say.

for what it's worth why not take the opportunity to extend the Mildura line to Broken Hill! This would allow traffic X Melbourne to Perth to avoid the Adelaide Hills maybe even double stack North of the divide an employment opportunity for Maryborough maybe? Southbound mineral and agricultural loading for the Port of Melbourne could be developed.

There is already such a project in concept phase, refer link below.  Im not sure it makes economic sense though.  But discussing this project is something for another thread.

This one again!
Originally used by a group in Mildura to threaten the Victorian Government into standardising the Mildura line over 10 years ago.
Convert the line to SG or we'll build an SG line to Broken Hill and export via Sydney/Adelaide/Perth/Darwin instead of Melbourne!

Even Cristal mining (Bemax) said they weren't interested!

As an Adelaide Hills bypass, a Mildura-Broken Hill 'Transcontinental Link' is estimated to cost half as much as equivalent bypasses that are closer to the Adelaide Hills (the current proposal being Monarto-Two Wells via Truro). $550-700 million vs $1.4 billion if memory serves me right.

Maybe ARTC could gouge some money out of Mitcham Council to help pay for it Laughing

I don't want to discuss it too much here, but i don't get the route for the transcon link to Broken Hill.  Just don't get it.

What additional business will this investment by the Victorian government provide ?

The Melbourne port and the port of Portland do not like it embrace rail.

What a shame SG to mount gambier could not be a part of thia project ?

Money needs to be spent helping customers get back onto rail.

Will SG access into corio oil be an option moving forward ?

Use the search function for once in your life, this has been discussed in every single thread on Mildura gauge standardisation.

I do use the search function. It is much improved.

It does not answer the question. I want more than a few motherhood statements.

There is nothing solid about where the return of this money will come from.

They seem to have no idea just how much money it would cost to bypass the Adelaide Hills. I wonder how many Mitcham ratepayers would be prepared to pay higher rates so they can contribute towards the project?

The Mitcham residents are just single minded people who want others to pay to fix their little pet problem.

Also a matter of money best invested.  If we thought in pure economic terms which is what Australian's have been beaten into doing thanks to economic rationalist thinking and their associated diatribe it would be a hard sell for the investment.

There would be other projects around SA where monies could be invested in rail which would provide a far larger economic benefit.

Read the business case then.

Has any work been happening on this project?  Surely they could be working on Ararat to Maryborough??

I drove past the line yesterday and it doesn't look like any work has been done on that section. They've removed the points at Maryborough but all the trees are still there growing up through the track

I don't think there is any funding in place yet is there?  I think the next Victorian budget will be the one to include the funding and therefore give some view on commencement, mindful that 2016-2018 is mentioned in the business case as the timeframe for completion.

The Vic Gov has their hand out for funding from the Feds for this project !
