Murdering someone for their Centrelink ?

The unfortunate murder of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter looks like it might have been motivated by a desire to either extort money from her family or obtain her single-parent Centrelink benefit for a while (ABC News).

Shocking but it's actually not the first time it's happened - how evil and depraved does someone have to be to kill a woman and her little girl for the sake of getting money - especially their Centrelink benefit (you aren't exactly doing it for their million-dollar superannuation).

There's some deranged people out there, that's for sure.

I agree. It occurs to me though that they would hardly have been able to access Karlie's bank account for so long without leaving a trail. Also, they kept her phone going all that time too, that that may be traceable.

Maybe it was the Stoccos?

That's what occurred to me immediately reading the article too - there's an excellent chance that they know who it is already. The other shocking thing was that it took at least two or three people to perpetrate.

The Stoccos are something else aren't they. I'm surprised the police haven't managed to plant some GPS tracker equipment they're likely to find and steal like they have with other bushranger types.

As someone who has driven from Canberra to Sydney and Canberra to Adelaide on many occasions, the locations of the bodies, in opposite directions immediately made me think of Canberra as a relevant point.

Belanglo Forest was an obvious spot given the Milat murders. One more body might be taken as another unidentified Milat victim (although the police probably have good records of which areas have already been searched on previous occasions).

The SA site is between  the Mildura area and Tailem Bend. I go through Balranald and Ouyen myself, but it looks as though the bodies were intentionally dumped in opposite directions from Canberra to reduce the likelihood of the two being connected...

If I recall correctly those responsible for the Snowtown "bodies in the barrels" murders also used their victims identities to obtain fraudulent Centrelink payments.

Hiding a body in Belangalo now or even in 2008 and hoping it will be pinned on Milat is a bad idea. He has been in custody since 1994, forensics is much, much better than that, and he would be on the suspect list for less than 10 minutes.

Now found and arrested in NSW, which was only ever a matter of time.

The police generally do well in Australia because they only pick fights they can win. They quite wisely don't bother in the area around north-western NSW and south-western QLD.

What do you mean by that - are there still bushranger types like the Stoccos in those places?

The Stoccos are now suspected murderers; and not very bright - they were occupying the property of the man they (allegedly) killed. If it's a known former place of abode (they worked there before apparently) AND there's a missing persons report for the property-holder then I don't think it's going to take long for the cops to work that one out!

And now it appears that police have made an arrest in the Lower Hunter Valley town of Cessnock.

It worked for the nephew of Milat.

Seems very easy to steal someone's identity these days.
I noticed the first four stories on the news this morning involved murders.

Appears as though they really were murdered for her Centrelink benefit but also to extort money from the family who were led to believe that the victim was still alive; apparently it began in 2008. The victim's account was access hundreds of times to withdraw the Centrelink payments until Centrelink finally stopped payment in 2011.

There was an article on the ABC website suggesting that identity theft to gain access to Centrelink benefits is a growing problem.

The Stoccos have now been charged with murder as expected. Looks like the cops might have had a go at Gino (although who can blame them) - his face was incredibly swollen.

It was reported last night on the TV news that he did resist arrest and hence the injury.
Both were taken to Dubbo hospital (but not admitted) before returning to Dubbo Police station

Sadly, since a known paedophile, already in gaol, has been arrested for the murder, I suspect the Centrelink benefits were a secondary gain and that the mother was murdered to gain access to the daughter, and the identity theft was just a convenient result for the criminals involved.

I am reminded of a gruesome episode of an English real life Police series where neighbours of a murder victim were trying to access his pension benefits the day after the murder while the body was still lying in the victim's flat. I can't recall if the person commiting the fraud was involved in the murder or just stole the dead mans documents. The actual London police appeared even more depressing than the actors in "The Bill" but just as effective, as I recall.

He refused to take his arms out of his pockets, which is a requirement when talking to any officer these days, and they tackled him to the ground

And probably stuck two boots worth in just for good measure.

They shot at coppers a few times, they were bound to get some rough treatment at arrest.

Its still vaguely possible that the death of both was not to gain the Centrelink payments to begin with but an after thought once they realised what the situation was and took advantage of it.
How both died is of course still unclear, the Mother I can understand as a result of an overdose, overly enthusiastic Sexual act or domestic violence but how did the Daughter die which I find is disturbing to say the least when you consider the possibilities based on conjecture and supposition being bandied about.

The fact there was a 1000Kms between where they were found is very worrying too.
