Because for much of transport history in Melbourne, the railways competed with the tramways. By putting the entrance of the station near a tram line, you are practically giving the tramways patronage and revenue.

Most inner suburbs stations near tram lines are designed like this. The one main exception is South Yarra which is right on the street as you can see here http://nexas.fotopic.net/p10283143.html

most stations around melbourne would look very nice if it wasn't for the sorts of people who hang around them. for example footscray would be a superb station if it wasn't for all the druggies and the like who seem to live there. as well dandenong love the station hate the people. as a few others and i have travelled to every station in melbourne it just comes down to two well three factors:
the way the station was built/refurbished
how well its looked after
who hangs around it.

good: flagstaff, parliament, melb central/museum, brighton beach, boronia, prahran, windsor, burnley, former albert park, williamstown, hawthorn, dandenong

bad: south kensington, merinda park, yarraman, keilor plains, st albans, hallam, werribee, former paisley, richmond, ringwood, kananook, stony point line, jacana, frankston

Aesthetically the worst stations would have to be the pre-fabricated concrete structures of the mid 70's that are seen around the system.
Some examples include Bayswater, Yarraman, Kananook, Glen Iris, Tooroonga, Ferntree Gully etc.

Let's have a mass cull of Von Dutch cap wearing fashion victims!

I was hoping with the eventual arrival of the Mitcham-Frankston Tollway, that Yarraman station would be redeveloped into something a bit better than the smeggy looking structure that is there now. However as the tollway is going to go under the railway line just to the east of the station, I doubt that anything will be done to fix up Yarraman.

I thought it was going over, but yeah I agree with revamp of Yarraman when the Tollway comes through.

Baywater is alright and so is FTG, there are worse.....

Oh and Upper Ferntree Gully is a good looking station also, but it be better if the underpass / bus exchange was given a bit of a refurb[/quote]

Now approaching Caulfield Station, passengers for the Rowville, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines, please change trains at Caulfield

The next station is Burnley, change here for services to Knox City

Kananook and Yarraman seem to have been based on a similiar design. I don't like Broadmeadows IMO - ugly material IMO and I hate those Muslim shops within the lower section of the station building Rolling Eyes. Doesn't Yarraman have bricks under part of it?

Talking about ugly stations, when was the current Surrey Hills opened? When was Pakenham opened? And what about the current Victoria Park?

The ones with the worst facilities are the ones with a small shelter with no building. All i can think of is:

Officer
Hallam
Montmorency
Possibly Wattleglen
East Camberwell Island Plat.
South Kensington (I don't know if the bottom part counts as a building - plat 2 has no shelter I can see and plat. 1 shelter is worse than some bus shelters!).

All Wattle Glen has is a fence and a metcard machine / validator

What's wrong with them? Confused

From pictures I've seen of it Officer is a clone of Hallam (or vice versa). Hallam needs an upgrade, it gets good patronage throughout most of the day and the 388 space carpark needs a few more spaces as it is full to overflowing much of the time.

Slightly of topic...

I once overheard someone on a train saying that McKinnon station on the Frankston line was not there from the start and was built relatively recently (maybe within 15-20 years ago). Is this true?

And was there even a North Frankston station possibly between Kananook and Frankston? When I was a kid I always thought there was a North Frankston station. (But maybe thats just what I called Kananook Smile )

Surrey Hills was probably done when the third track went through in 1971. Pakenham likely dates from duplication in the 1950s, but like a lot of suburban stations from that era had a pebble-mix cladding applied in (I'm guessing here) the late 1970s? But it has been altered more than once since, including being upgraded for Premium status. Victoria Park I don't recall, but may also be an old building that has been refurbished.

If you are talking about the station building, then similar to others mentioned above, McKinnon and other stations in that area were likely replaced when the third track went through in 1987. But if you mean the station itself, it was opened in 1884, three years after the line to Mordialloc opened.

No.

Would it be foolhardy of me to suggest that Victoria Park was of a similar design to Collingwood before it was refurbished in the mid 80's? Prior to the current building, Collingwood had a wooden structure that was semi-condemned if memory serves me right and closed off to the public. (isn't it still? Laughing )

My local station. Further, I think Ivanhoe is nice, as is Clifton Hill. Jolimont is different. Melbourne Central is nice however, has dropped a little given the changes above the station and the new entrance. Someone is going to get seriously injured during the morning pileup coming off the escalators at the concourse level.

Regards,
Brian

My 3rd closest Station behind Northcote and Brunswick! Maybe we could have a Gunzeling night together?
Too bad the signal box there isn't restored and a Model Railway group put in!

I went past there a couple of months ago so I was relying on memory. I just thought it had a fence and the machine but couldnt remember any bus stop shelters!
