Loco 520 renamed Shane - Competing on the Island of Sodor

    I was perusing the News website this morning when greeted with this story:

    It seems 520 has been turned into a Thomas character called Shane, and will star in the next Thomas movie. Toys are also expected to be released.

    It is great to see such a fine locomotive chosen to represent Australia. Let's hope he brings home the (green &) Gold!

    Would love to know the story behind how they came to choose 520!

    Hopefully some seriously good PR for Steamranger to be gained.

    Should have called him Shane-o I recon, anyway, nice to see a South Australian train going international (if only in a cartoon). It's a shame I'm too old to watch this movie without losing all reputation, I'm vaguely interested.

    By the sounds of it, its going to be  race, my bet is on Thomas for winning. Interesting that apparently the 520 didn't have to stop for water as often as other trains, I wonder whether the writers of TTTE took that into account?

    I was wondering why the chose the name "Shane", IMHO Bruce would have been more appropriate.

    John Draper has just posted on FB a great cartoon showing 520 and Thomas buddying up and 3801, R761 and H220 looking very miffed.

    I hope Steam Ranger are claiming copyright royalties for the likeness of 520, as I know the owners of the "Thomas the Tank Engine" marketing & publishing rights (HiT Entertainment (now owned by Mattel) successors to Britt Allcroft) are savage in claiming hefty royalties and suing anyone who dares promote the "Thomas"  image without permission and payment of a large fee (or cut of any profits).

    If the image of 520 has been purloined without permission, Steam Ranger should (in the words of Tex Perkins) "better get a lawyer son, better get a real good one...."

    P.S. this should really be sorted out, because in the crazy world of trademark infringement, Steam Ranger could end up being forced to pay royalties, or be sued, whenever they run, publicise or release images of their own engine!!

    The News Limited reports quote Dean Harvey along with the handouts from Mattel so I expect Steamranger were involved.

    There might not be much money in it for Steamranger, however.

    It might help to run occasional trips with a face on 520, of course...

    This tranche of international characters in Thomas are associated with national sporting colours, so any dark green and yellow locomotive was at a big advantage.... The Brazilian loco (a Sentinel 0-4-0 shunter of all things) is in yellow and light green.

    I think this is all based on the success of the Japanese character "Hiro" (a D51). A preserved railway in Japan has built a fake Hiro (rather than convert a real D51, for whatever reason).

    As to the naming, well who knows what goes on in the minds of the British production crew.

    In the news poll (see link posted by poxbox3030) Warne on gained 9% of the vote for who should voice the character, well behind Hugh Jackman at 35% and Shane Jacobson at 34.7%

    Personally I'd prefer the name Dean because Dean Harvey was one of the men behind preserving 520 in the first place.

    Also Malcolm would be appropriate as 520 is named Sir Malcolm Barclay Harvey

    12CSVT Why is it people instantly jump to the conclusion that the image has been stolen? or that Steamranger (ARHS - SA Division) where not involved in the selection?

    In all, this is quite a coup for Steamranger

    The tender reconstruction is underway, but I don't know how far the boiler works have gone. The Facebook page is Steam Locomotive 520 Restoration on Facebook.

    Given the iconic status of the loco for Steamranger you'd hope they can get it operational sometime in the near future, even more so since it's now a TV star...!

    The thought has crossed my mind that Shane won't fit on the same line as Thomas.  I'd be almost certain that Thomas is a standard gauge loco and Shane is broad gauge.  Can Shane be adapted accordingly?

    The 520s were made to be gauge convertible, so Shane would be able to run on Sodor's tracks -  after a bit of work.

    Sodor would probably be narrow guage anyway- it had lots of hills and sharp corners from memory.

    Refresh your memory weekday afternoons on ABC 2 .......... Sodor has it's 'normal' gauge (which connects to the "mainland" PLUS narrow gauge

    Simply because of the notorious ruthlessness and commercial opportunism of the trademark owners. I wouldn't put it past them. But if Steam Ranger were approached and have given consent, that is great! I hope they were able to negotiate some form of royalty income to help fund restoration work on 520. If that is the case, that is a great coup for them and worthy of the heartiest of congratulations!
