News article: Shorten’s plan to get rail, road traffic moving

Bill Shorten will vow to “unclog” major rail lines and roads in a $175 million commitment today that intensifies his policy contest with Malcolm Turnbull over transport funding, amid a dispute over Labor’s plans to raise new finance for big projects.

This is already being done with the General Holmes drive level crossing removal. http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/projects/sydney-south/sydney-airport/airport-east-precinct.html

The only way to get more freight off trucks and onto trains isn't by wasting time duplicating the Port Botany Link. It is by fixing the alignments of the main south, main north and north coast lines.

Which would put more pressure on the Port Botany Link.

Also what about the Main Western line? Or is that already as direct as it can be?

My point is that it is already being worked on as part of the Sydney gateway project and Westconnex under the current Liberal Government and so all he is promising is something already under construction.

The Port Botany link is not really under pressure and that upgrade I linked to will provide room for duplication. It is only a small section that is single track in any case and it doesn't really need billions of dollars spent on it to duplicate it.

Nothing can be done about the main western. You can't rip to blue mountains apart to build a new rail line.

One wonders if Shorten has take the time to look at the Port access problems in his home state?

Perhaps the Shorten move whether you say is already committed strengthens once again Sydney as the primary Australia port for general cargo.  The reason the Port of Melbourne is being sold off is the Port Authority are too hard to deal with and have put Melbourne down a path of truckaggedon.  This is not economic in the end.

The money from Shorten should be welcomed.

At least it looks like, on paper, a better plan than the Townsville port funding announcement is.

It's not that it isn't welcomed. The money and planning is already there and it is only a 3km stretch where it is single track and one wonders how that equates to $185 million dollars. What is the point of funding something that is already being done or planned to do.

@simstrain, perhaps its an example of one of those announcements that looks good but is essentially locking in something that is already going to happen - ie low risk announcement.

Wait - Shorten is making a plan for something that is already happening (the earthworks are already underway) so he can take credit for it if the project finishes?

How like a politician, yay, vote for politicians!

Will the Mascot grade separation allow for duplication of the single rail track?
