Frankston Station Precinct Redevelopment

I don't know whether anyone has already seen this, but I found this via social media this morning - it appears to have been quietly released. On this government website is a number of documents relating to the Frankston Station Precinct Redevelopment with work starting within weeks on upgrades to Young St.  It's actually quite interesting reading.  Contained within the Masterplan document are details on the thinking behind upgrading various parts of the precinct.  For example relating to the buses, they will continue to stop in Young St but are likely to be consolidated into fewer bays.

Of relevance to this forum is the proposed rebuild of Frankston Station.  The rebuild is apparently being guided by factors including pedestrian interaction & movement with existing buildings and access, making the platforms DDA compliant, and interestingly making sure the station can be prepared for future electric extension to Baxter.  For the rail component of this project the masterplan says that PTV & Metro Trains would like the signalling upgrade to computer interlocking and having the mechanical interlocking completely removed - there are still quite long rods along the western side of the rail area (not sure if they still work). So lots of scope to guide the redevelopment, Frankston Station details are on page 23 of the Masterplan document.

In the case of the Baxter electrification, will Frankston gain a new East (down platform) or will the station be developed back Into an Island platform station ?

Speculating somewhere here, I would suspect that Frankston might gain a new East platform as keeping a terminating road allows for more flexibility, much like Cheltenham. It has been noted elsewhere that a new stabling facility is to be built at Baxter between the Mornington branch and the Stony Point line.  This stabling facility would take over from Frankston & Carrum and possibly Mordialloc.  I don't think that Frankston will ever be developed back into an island platform as they won't want to cut pedestrian access - not saying that it couldn't be done which would mean an extended pedestrian underpass.  But this is highly unlikely given the need to keep good pedestrian access around the area.

There was no extra detail in the masterplan that I read as to how they were going to prepare the station for eventual Baxter electrification aside from what was already mentioned.

Believe me that every bit of point rodding you see at Frankston still works, the rodding in question works the down end points leading into the single line. IMHO the Whole station area should be left until there is new stabling at Baxter.
