1156T - Extensively damaged in Holmesglen crash 2000. Bent in the middle like a banana. Amazingly, the carriage was repaired and returned to service.

If the Holmesglen crash happened now under Metro, this car (and the set) would most likely be scrapped and replaced by a X'Trap and everyone would end up in the ceiling

For my two cents worth, a very good overview of the facts. Wouldn't have taken you 5 mins to dredge all this info up, so well done.

Likely, I'm annoyed enough that 305M-1003T-306M had to be scrapped.

BTW, when I went on the train last month, I saw the following sets that had been involved in accidents (I road on 480M on the way & 387M on the way back):
393M-1047T-394M (Broadmeadows runaway; Sighted in the Pakenham Yard)
320M-1107T-321M (320M hit by 90M at Syndal & 1107T damaged in a fire; Sighted in the Dandenong yard)
391M-1046T-392M (Ringwood accident 1992; also sighted in the Dandenong yard)
633M-1167T-634M (Involved in the Epping Collision; sighted at Hallam on the way back)

The only noticeable ex-accident sets I've didn't sight (or at least didn't see the numbers on,) were 570M-1135T-661M, 569M-1156T-612M, & 499M-1100T-534M.

From what I've gathered 305M-1003T-306M was written off due to the extensive structural damage the set endured. See http://vicsig.net/photo/15802. Given the X'Trapolis production was in full swing it would have been easier and more worthwhile to add another set onto the order rather than to spend millions rebuilding the damaged set which was already over 30 years old.

Yes, I know that. All three were pretty much stuffed after the accident (especially 306M). 305M could of been saved by wielding the end of 306M onto the back to the replace the stuffed and fixing any damage to 305M caused by the accident. BTW will 583M-1022T-589M ever return to service?

Should you add refurbished Harris 908M and friends.
They got flooded at Windsor on 7 February 1989 and some of the carriages were never used again.

Refurbished Harris 908M is still going strong today as H car BCH135, despite one caption saying it would never run again!

1003T was also scrapped with its friends 305M and 306M. RIP.

872M hit an EL Fairmont between Croydon and Mooroolbark on a down Lilydale service in 2009, in almost the exact same position the Hitachi derailed a few years later (which was on the up line however). Car was dumped on the tracks near the Cheeseman St pedestrian crossing and the front bogie of 872M derailed on impact. 872M also obliterated a signal and bent a stanchion in the accident (which is why there is now a single shiny galvanised stanchion in that location).

882M tried to visit Puffing Billy in 2004 and crashed into the fence at Belgrave.

Swing Door car 10D overran the buffers and derailed at Alamein on New Year's Eve 1956. There is a small caption about it in The Argus (1/1/57, page 3). There was one paper which had a photo of the accident, but NLA hasn't digitised any other major paper besides The Age up to 1954 (too early for this incident) - The Herald and The Sun (remember when they were two separate papers?) aren't there at all. It seems there was also another unrelated minor rail accident that day, with a rail worker being injured.

A Hitachi also headbutted another train in the Ringwood sidings in 1989 a few months prior to the Syndal accident, but the only picture I can find (from the 9 News video) don't show the car numbers, or whether it ran into a Comeng or another Hitachi.

Another Hitachi split the points in 2003 on the up out of Camberwell (centre track) and derailed, the fifth car ending up in the dirt was an ex D car with cab intact. I can't find the numbers on this one, but the cab end is facing a rear-panto centre motor. It is either 1995T, 1996T, 2005T or 2012T. It is not 2015T as the cab used to face 38M, and 225M was a leading M car before it was acquired by Elecrail and remarshalled into a 6 car all-SPOT-motor set and stuck in the middle facing 89M (also, it can't be any of the Bayside/M>Train sets, as they didn't run system-wide back then).

There was also another accident in the Ringwood sidings a few years ago where an X'Trap and a T class collided (most likely the IEV train or a ballast train). Once again, no numbers seem to be available for this one. The sidings at Ringwood seem to be notorious for accidents (not to mention the suburban steam loco which derailed there in 1906 and toppled down the embankment).

If it wasn't so serious it'd be hilarious.
One wonders whether they're now required to spray the rails with water after cleaning down platforms to prevent a reoccurence, or cleaning platforms is now banned as a result of this??

The Ringwood incident referred to was not in the sidings but on the running lines.  Some interesting reading here:
