It is not Rothbury or any of the Guildfords I could find in the postcode book.
This location still sees trains, plenty of them, but the infrastructure has changed.
Some of what is shown in the photo is no longer there and of what remains about half has changed significantly, that makes it archaeology.
What is portrayed in the photo (and there are two trains there) could not be done today, but there would be no need.

Your hints confirm my initial observation that it's something to do with Vic's NE line's SG conversion and that it is North of the dividing range. I have no idea of the location though...

The former SG loop at Longwood.
The loop has now gone, hence the cross is no longer possible.
And of course the track to the left was then BG, since converted to SG.

I was wondering whether it was Longwood or Violet Town, but then the latter had a Bridge near the station end. Only after deciding did I look at the Signal ID.
This was a BG Line and there is a bridge down there, probably a trestle.

Hamilton is near enough - it's the Coleraine Line looking SE from Kenny Street Hamilton. The Bridge crosses the Grange Burn. It was raining at the time, so I didn't try to see what remains.
