We need someone to come here and "drain the swamp"... urgently. Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy proves what a joke our political system has become by becoming a director of a new lobbyist group oddly-titled "Responsible Wagering Australia" - paid for by the biggest gambling interests in the country of course
(Fairfax). While there's nothing actually illegal about it, it seems quite nauseating that Conroy will become a paid shill for an industry whose very existence relies on the exploitation of the vulnerable and poor - especially younger working class men who studies identify as the most at risk of problem gambling time and time again. But Conroy's role will be primarily to alert his paymasters if there's any sniff in the wind that their industry might be subject to tighter regulation:
As Nick Xenophon, the senator who locked horns more than most with this industry, told Fairfax Media on Thursday morning, the clear role of the gambling industry lobbyist is to warn it ahead of time if some politician has worked up the courage to propose reform, then help dilute that reform.
Remember, Conroy started as a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Labor senator years ago with a maiden speech that declared he would use his time in office to ensure that a kinder, gentler capitalism would ensure - one that didn't marginalise or drive people to homelessness or suicide. Hmm...
