News article: Libs rail against poor train services

A group of local politicians have banded together to call on the state and federal governments to put more into Geelong's under-performing passenger rail services.

The group is accusing the Victorian Labor government of failing to deliver a business case or feasibility study for the duplication of the line from Geelong to Warrnambool despite receiving $1 million from the Federal government.

Duplication from Geelong to Warrnambool?  That was $1 million well spent!

I'm hoping they mean duplication from Geelong to Waurn Ponds.

We publish news from all sources here even the libs but I do find it interesting this liberal party rally for better services for Geelong commuters comes from the same people who pulled $200+m out of the RRL budget to fund a road no one really wanted.

Now you understand. Hear hear. Kite flying at its finest from a party who is about to lose the next Federal Election.

The Warrnambool - Geelong - Melbourne rail line needs fixing urgently.
Trains to and from Melbourne are overcrowded and unreliable. We need more daily services for Warrnambool and Colac and express peak hour trains between Geelong and Melbourne.
That's why your State and Federal Liberal MPs are fighting for more money for our rail services.
Despite $1m from the Turnbull Government to plan the rail duplication between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, we have seen no action from State Labor on this project.
While the State is responsible for passenger rail, dedicated Commonwealth funding would help the state plan and fund vital rail upgrades.
That’s why we need your voice, your friends and family to support our petition for better passenger rail.

Nope, nothing but kite flying. Yes because there is an election round the corner.

Just remember what the Coalition did to rail services. Removed $350 Million from the RRL and re-directed it to a stupid bypass in the Beaufort area. Cut $100 Million from the v/Line maintenance budget, problems that we are experiencing now on the RRL can be attributed to the blatant penny pinching of the Coalition Govt. The ALP is far from perfect. I can understand the angst felt by Albury passengers when only $15 Million is allocated to Albury services whilst spending $13.7 Million on a tram. But they are doing far more than the Coalition. Jacinta Allan is right, that petition is worth jack. Especially when you consider the biggest PT project initiated under the Coalition excluding level crossings, is the Domain Interchange.

Please try and be objective folks. I think we'd all concede that BOTH TEAMS would like to improve country rail services. By all means advocate the policies of the side you support, but intelligent and polite discussion isn't helped by slagging off the kids who hang around on the other side of the playground to cool kids like you.

If you just want to slag of the Libs and Nats, there is a special long running "I hate Malcolm Turnbull even more than you do" thread, where you will feel quite at home.

As this thread was created regarding the Liberal Party's concerns about public transport, it would do well for that side of the political spectrum to be aware that the former Baillieu/Napthine government lost office in part due to dropping the ball on PT, where no trains were ordered for V/Line for over 2 years whilst V/Line was enjoying very strong growth in patronage which leaves the current overcrowding issues seeming insignificant by comparison. Overcrowding was endemic on ALL RFR lines at that time.

Moreover, due to increasing the frequency of services through Deer Park and the Geelong line, there has been created a very bad bottleneck because the former government very unwisely and with little thought to the consequences re-directed that Melbourne bound rail flyover money to the Western Highway.

Further still, it's well known that V/Line had to pay an efficiency dividend to the former state government, despite a buoyant state budget surplus.

Therefore, I have no hesitation in calling on Mr Carew, who has the ear of the Shadow Minister for Public Transport and as a railfan who reads these pages to be aware and for the Shadow cabinet to be aware to reign in the bean counters on that side of the political spectrum if they wish to be taken seriously at the 2018 election.

Conversely, the Brumby government lost the 2010 state election on much the same issue...not enough investment in PT...despite the spin, and people were fed up with late, cancelled and infrequent services, particularly on the Frankston line and that's where the former government won office from economist/bean counter and his own worst enemy...John Brumby.

Yes they accuse Labor failing to deliver a business case for feasibility study but they already put funding planning for it. Means all well they are not against it. Just be patient Liberals, they'll announce it good time, just like the Ballarat rail upgrade. At least Labor had the initiative to start Melbourne Metro project, wonder if they put any funding into that. What they did is said to put money replanning the project, then waste money into the station that would have a bad cost vs benefit ratio using money from the port sale which they owed via an agreement made through asset recycling and then Labor had enough of the excuses and fund the whole project themselves. Let's hope what they say they will do and not make promises they can't keep like this political airport rail line (don't believe them one second)

Ermm, The inner suburb of South Yarra is in the state seat of Prahran. Like other prosperous inner city areas, Prahran is held by the Green Party, not the Liberal Party.

Oops my bad. Let me change that. Well it did have a bad cost vs benefit ratio. Due to the amount of aquisitions for a direct connection unlikely to happen soon. Although provision has been made whether it is needed later on.

Seriously Bogong cram it. Taking lectures from you about impartiality and being objective is laughable, no matter how much you use your patronizing analogies. When posters are criticizing Jacinta Allan, not a peep out of you but every time someone criticizes your beloved coalition you are asking them to be objective. Praising the Coalition for talking about fixing
