i never bother backing up my comp, because every day windows xp makes a restor point so if anything happens i just restore the computer. for example my brother installed the sims 2 on our computer, then the autorun would only auto run the sims 2. so i just resored to the previous day. and now before i install anything i make a restore point. if u need any more info or help on setting up restore points with windows xp e-mail me at a_j_r_massey@hotmail.com

Don't just use this as a safety measure. A lot of the time it fails to even work properly and won't restore to a previous point.

Now last sunday I went out to the Geelong Computer Swap meeting and brough a DVD-RW duel layer burner. I will be burning my backups on to DVD-Rs. These disk do hold 4.7 gig of data. Thats very handy specially if you download M.S.T.S addons from Railpage Australia™™™ and train-sim.

Now all we have to do is wait for the dual layer blank DVDs to become available, which will double the data to 9.4Gb.

Anybody seen these around yet at a reasonable price ?
Hey Vulcan I don,t think there is gonna be a daul layer blank DVD-Rs. I use a standard blank DVD-R disk to Backup Files by useing Nero software that came with my DVD-RW burner. doing this you can burn files on a disk and if you don,t fill the diskup you can still add files onto the disk lateron
Came very handy for msts addons

Opps I forgot to add daul layer means the Burner wites CD-R & RW and DVD-R & RWs I guess that what it means.

With the Australian addons you wont be filling a DVD-R in a hurry. With the Amercian addons you will fill the disk up, thats if you download the routes on train-sim.com

I think your confusing DVD-R with DVD-RW's here. When you burn data to a DVD-R it can't be overwritten and the single layer disc will hold only 4.7Gb of data. You can add data up to this amount until you fill the disc unless you have finalised the disc during a burn session. A DVD-RW disc allows multiple burns and data overwrites for the life of the actual disc (1000 burns or whatever is it). A DVD-RW burner will handle any of the two discs and burn them according to your input via Nero.

A dual layer DVD-R holds twices the amount of data when compared to a single layer DVD-R. Many movie DVD titles are Dual layered discs.

I,m not confusing at all ..I said with DVD-Rs You can still add files
on it even if you burn data no it before as long if the disk has plenty of room on it. I did not say you can overide the original data on DVD-Rs you can still add files.. Can you now undersand now. Nautally you can,t rewite DVD-Rs but DVD- RW you can

i got a sony multi format dual layer re-writable dvd burner for $180, on special from harvey norman.

i think you guys are gettin confused with dvd+R and dvd-r's. a dvd+r has sh*t quality for burning footage to. thats what a dvd-r is for. a dvd-r closes like a cd when finished being burnt. it like a cd once uv burnt to a dvd-r you can't access it again, but this is not the case with a dvd+r. a dvd+r is like a floppy disk, except a dvd+r can hold about 4000 times more things than a floppy disc. a dvd+r, yo can add or take off things as you wish. when a burning dsession is complete it does not close the dvd+r, well thats what it does with nero 6. and then there is dual layer dvd's which can hold anything up to 8.7gb.

but then even better there is a blue ray disk coming out soon Very Happy 20gb of storage Shocked you could backup a whole hard drive

i think ur confused betwwen dvd-r's and dvd+r's once a dvd-r is closed you can't add or take off anything from it, like a cd, a dvd+r you can add and files at will, providing there is enough space on the dvd.

Oh dear You see casseyjones I use Nero Burning... When I write on DVD-R disk.. I don,t close the disk, I leave it open so I can add more file to it. Also I can use the disk even when its open. Natually if you are silly enoght to close the disk. You will be waisting it. Well you won,t be writing on that disk again. That,s Why I Leave My Writing Session Open. Now can you see what I,m talking about now. If not you need to know how to use your burning program properly. Let,s put it this I surely know how to use my program.
After use of the disk I protect it in a case and put it away so it wont get wrecked.

To use Nero is
1. A blanky in the tray
2. Open your Nero program
3. Select the program like what you wanna burn
4. I normally open my hard drive to target the files I wanna burn by setting them up. Instead of add I normally drag the files in the main window
5.Than you click next
6 It will come up your writing speed I normanlly burn slowest speed and disk title it as well. ... There are 2 oppsion down below All Files To Be Added Later (Multissesion Disk) You need to have that ticked.. If you Don,t after burn it will close on you and you can,t write on that disk again..same apply to CD-Rs
7. Click Burn
