NR41 was being used to shunt the consist and then moved to Platform 3 and parked (most likely to be used on 2AM8 tomorrow)

And yes it was 36 carriages (I rechecked my list)



As it was explained to me the maximum length of the "Expedition Ghan"* is 38 vehicles
Now GSR count the locos in that number, but I don't, I count the "towed" consist, so the max is 36 carriages
The reason is that on the return trip (Darwin - Adelaide) there are two lengthy stop overs (Alice Springs and Manguri) and 38 "vehicles" is the maximum length that can be stowed away at one of these stop overs.
You'll notice that the "Expedition Ghan"* does not haul motorail wagons, this length restriction is the reason for their exclusion.

* The "Expedition Ghan" from Darwin to Adelaide takes a day longer than the 'normal Ghan' and operates during the northern "peak" season (May to October)

Makes a lot of sense now. We thought we had missed it, but managed to beat it to Port Germein and we saw a helicopter chasing it. Normally it would have then left us in its dust, but it slowed a couple of times for the chopper and we manged to beat it to Mambray Creek.

The consist has 3 power cars, and they are NOT interconnected
The usual consist (today's for example) is Power Car, Crew Car, 7 x Sleeper, Lounge, Dining : Power Break : 2 x Dining; Lounge,
5 x Sleeper; Crew Car; Power Car : Power Break : 3 x Premium Class; Premium Dining/lounge; 2 x Dining; Lounge; 5 x sleeper; Baggage; Crew; Power.

The power car next to the Premium class is always shunted so the Generator engines are away from the premium class (Noise reduction!)

* At the usual departure time of 12:15pm the Ghan pulled away but stopped again after moving just 60 metres (3 carriages lengths) and then reversed back approximately 120 metres (6 carriages lengths) at 12:20pm and remained there until the 12:35pm departure.
Reason unknown!
