Yeah it is finally happening. That rail corridor is subject to many upgrades in the next couple of years. Also what I found interesting to see the first time the Australian Government logo is attached to the project.

as part of my 'backwards' view on gauge I hope they don't put any variable gauge concrete sleepers in...Twisted Evil

Hey if anyone has been to those consultations on the Ballarat Rail Project, did Toolern Station come up? Just wondering.

So Bacchus Marsh won't be getting a second platform.
There's a thread about it here -

@Gauntlet Bacchus Marsh will still get a second platform. Check the newsletter I linked. The the right hand side, you see the key features include the extra platform at Bacchus March

Instead of moving the ballan loop, why not just increase it by another 1.2km.  Gives roughly an extra minute of service recovery time from delays.

Increase the length = Increase the cost. They already added Toolern station into the scope.

The reasoning why they moved it was to avoid the possible environmental impact of construction near the waterway.

I'm assuming the "environmental effects" is just an excuse for not paying for a bridge which would be more expensive.

I'm going to assume There will be another Ballarat Line upgrade in 10-20 years time and it will probably happen then.

Now to be a 4.5 km loop instead of 5kms,  by repositioning it slightly in an Up direction the need to build a second bridge is avoided at  Bostock reservoir.  (First bridge is at the Up end of Ballan. )

To earlier queries  :

Other Loop will be 4kms long at Spreadeagle Road on the Millbrook direct line ,loop  length dictated by the distance  between the two high viaducts.

Stabling now to be at Maddingley on the Down side of Bacchus Marsh, one would suspect with double track for the short distance from the Down end of The Marsh .  Better site for stabling and releases land at Bacchus Marsh for car parking on Down side .

Yes second platforms at  both Bacchus Marsh &  Ballan .

What Ballan Loop?

The same Ballan loop that's been a part of the works proposal since it was funded in the 2016-17 budget for the Ballarat upgrade project.

Since a few years ago, with the rapid growth In passenger train patronage.

Car parking development Is more or less maxed out on the Northern side of the railway along Station Street.

People even start to park their cars illegally In weird awkward spots.

Thanks kuldalai.

However, bridge at the Up end of Ballan; what bridge? Do you mean the Windle St underpass?

Is the Maddingley stabling facility to be located alongside the Rowsley Loop or located between there and 'The Marsh'?

So your not a local then? When exactly was the last time you were there? Not including weekends and Public Holidays of course.

The car park got a large extension during RFR works in 2004-2005. Then got another one about 3 years ago. It still gets close to full by 8 every day.

So Bacchus Marsh won't be getting a second platform.
Gauntlet
No, Bacchus Marsh is certainly getting a 2nd platform. To be built right were the yard is now. The yard is going, being replaced with new stabling facilities at Rowsley (3km further down the line), a 2nd platform is being built with a footbridge connection between both platforms. There is also going to be a new bus terminal and drop off zone and a new large carpark on the southern side, which will take up what space from the yard isn't taken by the new platform.

So far, it would seem the turntable and Goods Shed looks as is they are safe and will be retained, but the old signal box is set to go, due to structural issues.

Small correction the Bostock Reservoir Is West / Down the line from Ballan.

The Spreadeagle Road loop looks like It will run under the 2 road overpasses built with the diversion (Spreadeagle Road and Peerewerrh Road) clearances for a second track look very tight (when standing on the bridge and looking down at the track) looks like the existing track would have to be slewed to one side a bit ?

Assumingly that the new stabling facilities at Maddingley will roughly be between Bacchus Marsh station and Rowsley Loop, I guess it would be expecting too much for double track to run the entire distance between the station and Rowsley?
