Over a decade ago, I started the 160/260 Series Electric Multiple Unit thread, so I thought it was high time I started one for the new 700 Series EMU being built in India for Queensland Rail.

Some photos of the testing currently taking place ...

The Human Rights Commission has an application for an exemption to the 1992 Disability Act, which would permit the trains to run. Disability groups have threatened to appeal if QR wins the exemption.

Downer EDI at Maryborough gets to modify some of the sets to make them dda compliant. Presumably that means installing a guards compartment somewhere in the middle of the train, where the second drivers compartment normally would be?

The main DDA issue has nothing to do with guard location.  However some disability groups are losing all credibility by harping on about it.   The MAIN issue (there are a couple of others, but very minor) is to do with the toilet module which is in the middle of the train. The toilet module isn't big enough, AND the walkway next to it is too narrow.   With exception of the ICE train, the trains in qld have all had their toilets located next to a drivers cab, so the toilet can be wider as the access way next to it only needs to be wide enough for the cab door, which doesn't need to be DDA compliant width.

In the electric Tilt train, there is only 1 DDA toilet, which is rather large, and in the diesel tilt train, the DDA compliant toilets are massive, but also double as a shower, so the extra space isn't wasted. (however, they are big).   In perspective, a 4 car NSW explorer than less space dedicated to toilets than 1 DDA compliant CTT car.

This mornings Brisbane's Courier Mail reports some NGR's will enter service as early as next week without some of the required disability access problems ironed out, and with the whole roll out process still before the Human Rights Commission over these problems.  My guess is the 700's will be used only on the Gold Coast line where the trains are express through most of the suburban area and so with less chance of many disabled people even needing to use the service.

The gold coast line makes sense for them to start on.   All stations they stop at are heavily staffed.   May have some problems at park road (platforms 3,4) and eagle junction.   Might require extra staff at those stations.
Also they will make use of the 140km/h, so on time running will improve slightly.  The trains that currently can obtain 140km/h have lower acceleration, and most services use trains that have a max speed of 130km/h, but with similar acceleration to the NGR's.

This morning's Brisbane Sunday Mail reports extra staff are being recruited to man the NGR's to assist the disabled, who board and disembark in mid train.

( For interstate readers - the Guards on the existing fleet travel mid train and currently assist the disabled.  The NGR's will now have the Guard at the rear ).

Initially 21 are being recruited when the new trains start tomorrow.  My guess would be 3 per train per day, meaning one per train in 8 hour shifts.  I would imagine the extra staff would ride mid train with the loading ramp nearby.  This staff could also double as an extra pair of eyes for security purposes.

I'm told that the extra staff will be based at all stations from first to last service daily, NOT on the trains.

If Coachdriver's info is on the money, with 21 staff initially on platforms in shifts, sounds like the Gold Coast line for starters.

So that doesn't sound like our Cleveland line will be seeing 700's for a long time.  Trains stopping Wynnum Nth are roughly 0504-0024 ( 0124 Sat and Sun mornings ) and as I live opposite the station there are very few pax after about 1930 inbound, so it would be a lonely job.  The station itself is normally manned roughly 0500-1230 Mon to Fri.

Was speaking to an assistant at Central just now and he said roughly half of the NGR’s will not have toilets in them and those NGRs will be on suburban runs. The NGRs with toilets will be refitted to DDA compliance and be used on the Interurban runs

I've heard the plan is to have 2 toilets on the new trains situated next to the cabs on the trains with the toilets.  Should have toilets added to all the new trains.  Having 2 fleets is a recipe for disaster.

In the short time I was on it I thought it was fine. It’s very quiet inside and the seats also act as a sort of headrest. My only gripe is it doesn’t seem like there’s a great deal of padding in the seats and I wouldn’t want to do a Roma street to Gympie commute on these seats

According to todays Sunday Mail, Qld can't bail out of the Indian contract to construct the remainder of the NGR's, without great expense.

They are adopting the cheaper alternative which is to bring out the rest of the units from India, but send each one up to Maryborough to fix to local standards at a cost of $100 million, which apparently is cheaper than breaking the contract.  At least more jobs for the locals in Maryborough, which is a good thing.

I here the unions are pushing State Government for the mods to be done in Maryborough but Downer do not want to touch it.

A question regrading seating arrangements.  I heard on the ABC the seats are all facing one way and that when returning all PAX are forced to ride backwards with many becoming motion sick.  Any truth in this or is the media hamming it up as usual.

Tks KRviator.  From your diagram it looks the media has a point as the majority do appear to face one way.
