NO.  As posted previously .  Expected to open at least a month LATe sometime in February with all trains running via Ararat Yard out to Pyrenees Loop to run around before proceeding to Melbourne, Geelong or Portland on sg .  usual delays with signal design and equipment no doubt, with direct connection commissioning still some months after initial re opening .

At Ararat  existing bg mainline stays where it is .  New mixed gauge diamond goes in the bg mainline around 400m in an Up Direction from existing just on the Down side of Alfred St lx .  Standard gauge mainline moves to the yard side of the bg mainline and the new direct link from Avoca links into the sg mainline just on the down side of the mixed gauge diamond.

What length area the trains likely to be?

trains used to run around in Ararat Yard when sg opened to maryborough in 1995 so why the need to run out to the loop?

Makes no sense.

There is no loop at Ararat any more. There are a couple of double-ended sidings accessed via manually operated turnouts. It's probably considered easier to go to Pyrenees and have a signalled run-round rather than the crew letting themselves into, and out of the sidings.

Whatever happened to 2 road?

I suspect the bean-counters got to it. But maybe it was too short to be an effective crossing loop these days.

Note that moving the SG to the north of the BG requires some earthworks to be done as the reservation is not wide enough. This has not happened yet, and so as kuldalai says, completion at the Ararat end is a long way off.

So, what do you reckon the chances are that the SG fruity will arrive at Merbein this Thursday?

The standardised train line between Maryborough and Yelta will set it's first freight train roll through Mildura later this week.
It will leave Melbourne on Wednesday and is expected to be in town by midday on Thursday where it will be loaded at the Merbein Container Depo before heading back to Melbourne that night.
Around a dozen workers at the depo are preparing for the re-opening of the line this week.

is the track between Ararat and Maryborough completed?

No.  Still ballasting.  Some of the level crossing upgrades are still being worked on.

In summary then we have;

No SG between between Ballarat and Maryborough
No SG between Ballarat and Gheringhap
No SG open between Maryborough and Ararat

What is the state of the track north of Maryborough?

Maybe a train will limp through on Maryborough to Ararat Yard?

Maryborough to Dunolly is as it was since 1996 (dual gauge).  The re-gauging is more or less done, although I believe some yards haven't been reconnected yet, and I'm not sure about whether tamping and grinding is complete.

The path taken probably would be Mildura-Maryborough-Ararat-Melbourne via the Western SG.

Most of the SG is probably close to being in place for that to happen - but this is not confirmed yet.

Lets see what Wednesday brings!

Very much so.  But a little bit of pressure on the contractor and everyone involved might be what is needed to get the job done.

Given that the train will be leaving Melbourne on Wednesday and arriving around midday Thursday i think they are planning in a fair bit of slow running in some sections...

Any rumours as to what locos and/or wagons will be doing this run?

BTW the source is Jacinta Allen's twitter - its not coming out in the way Railpage is rendering the link at the moment (for me at least).

Which company is this driver training for?

It doesn't work on a mobile phone.  Does on Google Chrome PC browser though.

It's the ballast train btw.  Maybe performing double-duty as a driver training train?

On my desktop (Mac) running Safari all i get is the video with no source, though you can see that in the http language if you reply with quote..

Its definitely the ballast train - they cut out any wagons it was hauling.  I doubt is fake news.  Definitely some spin to it though!

When will the first train be through as it seems from the video the track is ready but no direct link to the Portland line or to Melbourne but so what, not really a big deal.  Cheaper to put another loop into Ararat Yard and reverse the train.

When will we see loading for Mildura/Adelaide or west exchanged at Ararat?
  Carnot Chief Commissioner

It looks like they planned for all the VIPs to be there months ago for this photo op.  Still going to be an uphill battle to get a train through to Merbein this week IMHO.  All the best of luck I suppose.

Trains will be running around in the Pyrenees Loop until they sort out the new connection straight thru to Maroona.

I can’t see the link being built until Portland traffic is confirmed which is marginal as the main line via Ballarat will be the route.

The direct maroons link is off the table in my view.

It's not just for Portland. The direct link to Maroona is the only way for a train to get from Mildura to Melbourne without reversing. I would be mighty surprised if it isn't built within a few months.

You've lost me on this one. Must be missing something as Ballarat is BG.
