Ideas: Ability to insert an image from your computer

Flickr has become hard to use and I suggest the forum posting allows users to add images into their posts when compiling the forum post.

The images could be stored in a server and could also forum part of the posting system. Railpage has nose become more reliable than flickr when running images.

Yes most sites allow you to simply upload from your own computer an image or something without needing to use Flickr or like type of site that is what is really needed on here but keep it simple for those of us that are not rocket scientist's.

You just click on add an image and you get a range of options including upload from your computer. Click on it and follow the instruction's and it automatically uploads and when ready you can add it into your post as an attachment or something!

That is what they are asking I think, and would be a good idea to share photos etc on here. At the moment it is a dogs breakfast and most of us have given up trying to post up photo's etc.

I hear you.  So the use case as described above would translate to:

Compiling a post

When composing a forum post or a  private message or news item i would like to be able to insert a photo or video?? into the post so that I can display the photo/video/audio inline with the content I am creating.

I can select to have the media item(s) come from my new gallery at Railpage (media store) where I have my photos stored for use on the site or I can add/insert the media item from my computer which will also be added to the media store.

If I am on a mobile device I want to be able to select the media from the device photo store for uploading.

Management

I want the ability see view all my images stored on Railpage.  I want the ability share the image on social media @s3_gunzel being facebook or twitter or instagram from the site.

When I am on the mobile app I want to see my photos also in the mobile device app in the same way i can see the media I own on the Railpage site.

I want to be able to copy a link to an individual item in my media store so I can share the item in an email for example.

Make sense?

What you want, @bevans, is a core Railpage feature, one your new developer will need to program.

It’s a different API, and will tie into the core site.

What are your thoughts on the use case and about acceptance criteria?

Yeah, ok, sorry. I misread that.

Let’s try again.

Railpage runs (what I presume to be, based on the phpNuke heritage of the site) a bastardised version of phpBB2. Which never came with a gallery, as you well know. So, the unenviable task now is making a gallery happen. Now - we have the DAMS, which I think would be the best idea - the site can tie into the DAMS, and pull an image. It would then be trivial to add to a thread view within the application.

Basically, you’d be looking at:

User wants new thread > Creates new thread as they do now > where the thread options are (should be, below the text area) add an option to upload an image to the DAMS, provide a link, embed the link into the post > “Create Thread”

Likewise for comments.

Getting it onto Social Media may cause a slightly different issue. I’ll have to read the APIs again. It’s  been a while since I looked into it.

I want to take users who are interested along with us on the journey.  How feature writing is done and how that translates into code and testing.

I assume what some are asking for is effectively  space to store their images.  Who pays for the server space? who then "owns" the image, and who can delete it ?  Issues of who own copyright of the upload image, the  person uploading it, or how to credit the photo's author. And if the photo is contest by non-Railpage people, what then ?

How is the image managed, approved?  Can other sites link to the image ?  Will there be limits on how many images at once that can be uploaded? Size of image ? file type ?

Lots of questions indeed. Me no idea.  I am sure it will all be thought of.

Would it be useful? for many, yes.

There should definitely be a limit on file size and type so you don't run out of space on the RP servers and it doesn't take too long to load or scroll through the forum posts.

In terms of copyright at minimum the uploader should credit the original owner of the image.

On other sites where I post photos are limited to 1024 pixels wide and less than 500 kb in size. Some limit to no more than six pics in a 24 hour period. Not photographically brilliant but a lot better than nothing.
Anyone who then wants a full res photo can always request one.

If there have to be limits for photographs so be it but as long as we can upload an image or two from our computer at home easily without having to use 4 hands or have a degree in rocket science or something would be nice.  Acknowledging the photo if the photo is not yours is par for the course these days and a hell of a lot of photo's can be found on a subject in one of the search engines. So really all that can be expected is to simply acknowledge the original photographer if known. Some place's steal a photo and then put it up somewhere and then it shows up in a search minus any ID about it, so if you put one like this up, just a photographer unknown and later if you do find out who the photographer is then just edit the post to change it.

Limiting the size of the photos will also save a page widening out that far to accommodate the photo that it even runs of a large screen monitor. Also it will make pages more uniform in width by limiting the size of photo's. Any one complains it is a simple matter to direct them to a online photo resizer to make it small enough to fit there are plenty on line and a lot are free as well.

One picture is worth a thousand words it is said and it also helps trying to clarify a point when you can put  up a photo to illustrate what you said or something. It really needs to be done though so that more photo's can be placed on here if needed.

It only needs an attachment area under the reply box with a click on box labelled add files you click on that and it will open your computer at home to select whatever you want to put up. When the attachment has uploaded fully and you get another box to tell you to insert the image click on that, then hit the submit button and the whole thing should then be up photo and all. It does not need to be elaborate but just that it works!

Can we have a way please to take a photo and then make a post with this photo to a thread ?

My idea is that you can compose a forum post on your mobile and then be able to insert a photo in the post from your mobile either from the photos already on the phone or from the camera.

Can we please have this too ?

A user on any supported device would have the ability to add an image to the forum post from mobile or computer.

The use cases look good @bevans make it happen as we are all looking forward to it.

Good to see some devs coming on board to get stuff done.
