Now that this project is to go ahead it will be necessary to mine and crush Ayers Rock to provide the necessary aggregate for the concrete tunnel.
Oops Ayers Rock is sandstone so no good for concrete.  Laughing
YM, have dealt with enough shoddy builders, Ayers Rock will be fit for purpose  used as aggregate. Someone will be paid enough to ensure that is signed off.
Whilst in the NT, a branch line should be constructed to the Pilbara, allowing iron ore to be rail freighted into Asia. Yia this ever expanding undersea tunnel network.
Shipping lines take notice.Very Happy

Raises the question will we ever see a line from the Alice-Darwin line to the Pilbara via Ord River area?

Would you build this tunnel as a 1500v overhead or 750dc third rail?
  CPH8 Locomotive Fireman

It would have to be renewable energy of course. Lots of solar panels floating on the water

No. I think that it should be built using that vacuum sucker thingy that was promoted on RP a year or so ago for between Melbourne and Sydney IIRC.

That vacuum thingy sucker would be Elon Musk.

Or at least his investors are the suckers.

There are perhaps some engineering challenges we've overlooked.
Given Indonesia is on the ring of fire and the recent earthquakes, lots of studies and consultants will be a necessity.

Mere details!
There's no harm in riding in a train in a sub-marine tunnel during an undersea earthquake, is there?

like that between Europe and the UK which could we ever see aundersea rail tunnel between these two countries for both passenger and freight services?
MetroFemme
Honest answer is no it's not possible.  It might in a few  hundred year, but I doubt it, as never say never....
