The area of Elwood is quite large and currently has very poor PT access. In Elwood alone, the population is close to 15,000 people and the area is quite large. However, while we talk about all these extensions to Clyde from Alamein to Oakleigh, what isn’t mentioned is an extension off the Sandringham Line at Elsternwick To Elwood. This extension is important, obviously there are some that are more urgent but it should be placed alongside Wallan, Melton, Clyde, Wyndham Vale, Wollert and Baxter.  

The link would serve an established area that is growing. It would be have High patronage and improve connectivity to Melbourne. The distance is only 2.5km and it provides great benefit. The cost would vary, if a shallow tunnels are used then it would be much cheaper than traditional tunneling with TBM. There is capacity on the Sandringham Line, currently to allow for a line to Elwood.

An extension of the 96 - from St Kilda to Elwood won’t cut it at the moment. It would take 30-40 Minutes and that is far too long. The 96 has too many stops and no light priority, plus the speed is too slow, that is another issue that belongs in the Trams forum.

Re-open the tramline down the end of Glen Huntly Road to point Ormond. 5 minutes to Elsternwick station if you run the trams to Carnegie.

Or as mentioned extend the 96 down Barkley St then up Glen Huntly road to terminate at Elsternwick station.

It floods at least once a year near the canal so tunnels will never happen there, let alone a spur trainline.

Apparently, the railway to St. Kilda was going to be extended further through the bayside strip but it was cancelled due to opposition from landowners.

Poorly served by public transport??? It's not even the most poorly served area on this map, let alone the rest of metropolitan Melbourne!

There are some wild ideas floated on here but this is easily one of the wildest.

Or maybe skyrail down New St then hooking right into Ormond Rd with an elevated terminus above the Elwood shops? I mean the locals would probably try and lynch you for destroying the beauty of their area, but who knows, you may just get away with it.

Perhaps a surface level line through the middle of Elsternwick golf course. I'm sure the 8th green could make way for a nice park n ride. Remember, Elsternwick is a public course, so it wouldn't cost the government anything to turn it into a railway line. Of course, other parts of the line would still need to go through houses, so they would need acquisition, but its alright, the property values aren't through the stratosphere in that part of town, so it wouldn't cost much.

In fact, I really like the idea of a surface level line, especially with a level crossing across the Nepean Highway, that would be ace.

So after that side has been sorted, and your line has been built, then how do you propose to run this line? As a shuttle from Elsternwick station? Or would you send every second Sandy train to Elwood instead. Sorry residents of Brighton, Hampton and Sandringham, you can loose every 2nd train so Elwood can have a station.



Electrified extensions to Wyndham Vale, Melton, Wallan and Clyde are all in the realms of reality. Your idea isn't.

Well, I did note that a surface level line, with a tunnel through a hill, was proposed before all that Bayside development, too bad there were objections from landowners of the 19^th century. I am very into alternative history and have been thinking for a while of starting a series of threads for enthusiasts who are also into alternative history, rail-related aspects of alternative history in this case.

I looked at the route in google maps, it's a long shot, but it would link up elwood to the main network, have connections to other lines (and with a change at Murrumbeena, the V/Line network) and solve Chadstone's rail connection issues. I know it's probably cost prohibitive, but so is the suburban rail loop.

At least the Suburban rail loop has a functional reason to exist and will serve transport needs right across the Metropolitan area.

Any one of about four tram options would suffice, but such is unlikely.

I think that if you wanted to improve PT access to Elwood then trams would be the way to go and only one route need to be extended.

1, Extend the route 78 south from its current terminus at the end of Chapel St at Balaclava, down Brighton Rd to Glenhuntly Rd then head west to Elwood along Glenhuntly Rd on (rebuilt) tracks to the original Elwood terminus.  The only section of track that needs to be built is a south-west curve and points at the intersection of Glenhuntly Rd & Brighton Rd and a length of track to Point Ormond.

Forget about train lines or extending the 96, it's well-served by buses south from the St Kilda interchange that basically follow the old VicRail tram routes. However extending the 78 could have merit.

It would create the Baxter-Craigieburn line via Caulfield, Elsternwick, Elwood, St Kilda, Albert Park, Anzac, Flinders Street, Flagstaff, West Melbourne and on to Craigieburn. It would also open up space for a dedicated Rowville line, and Airport line trains to run via the city loop, allowing excellent connection to the city from the airport.
