Welcome to Trump town

Mattis resigning is a huge deal, he is the last of Trump's original senior officials in areas connected to national security policy to leave. Ironically, that came in the same week as the latest sentencing hearing of the first one to go - original National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who lasted only three weeks.

Moving on to the looming issue of a government shutdown, this will be a big chance for Drumpf to follow through on a key campaign promise: that he would run the government like he has run his businesses. Trump Entertainment, Trump Mortgage, Trump Airlines, the New Jersey Generals, Trump Steaks, Trump Network, Tour de Trump, Trump Magazine, Trump University, and just this week Trump Foundation…

If Trump really does shut down the government money supply because it won't pay for his border fence, Congress should have him charged with Demanding money with menaces - aka blackmail.
  justapassenger Chief Commissioner

Congress has adjourned without a deal, Trump's third shutdown in a year (new record) begins in less than 90 minutes.

Time then, it would seem, for the thoughts of one Donald Trump on what causes a shutdown:

“A shutdown falls on the President’s lack of leadership. He can’t even control his party and get people together in a room. A shutdown means the President is weak.”

A huge number of government employees are now expected to work without pay.  All it needs is, for example, Air Traffic Controllers to tell Trump, "No Pay; No Work", and the whole of this lunacy would end.

At worst, the shutdown is partial, a bit rough on the folk who will have to wait for pay, or for those who have been stood down, but nothing to put the country at risk.

Of course, this is CNN, so use your own judgement - Trump has accused this crowd of purveying "fake news"...

Hard to beat the signage on California (and other) highways. Don't overlook the video by Nick Knudsen in the comments.

Trump is wanting a $5 billion dollar border wall, has also just given some top brass in Washington D.C a $10,000 pay rise whilst simultaneously arguing there isn't enough money to give a pay increase to all the federal workers who are now not getting paid.

This Trump really is a special kind of stupid eh, so he's threatening that the Govt Shutdown could last for "months if not years", holding the country hostage virtually, because he is not going to get his wall, like a baby not getting his rattle, and costing folk their employment, hmmm, I wonder if even Don Dunstan can defend his actions this time...

Kind Regards

I must say that the Americans fascinate me.  I would have thought it's elementary, "if you ain't payin' me; I ain't workin'."  The whole country would grind to a halt within days if people refused to work, and Trump would be a dead man walking. No power, water, food etc for the White House; no air traffic control so he can't fly anywhere; no drivers; nobody selling petrol, and so on. I'd like to see some power crazed fool try a similar stunt here.
Someone needs to point out to Trump the difference between Democracy and Dictatorship.

The yanks definitition of shutdown and mine must be vastly different.A shutdown is exactly that, pull down the shutters and close shop/service, whatever it be.
People are expected to show up for no dollars? And trump is prepared for this to drag on for months/years?
No pay, no stay. Have personally applied this theory, very effective.
Israilfan above is spot on, a special kind of stupid.

Trump would do well to worry a little less about being a smartasre with the media, and a little more about doing what he's paid to do.

He is really cranky today - the Democrats have refused to 'Invite" him to address Congress with the yearly State of the Union Address (seems he has to be invited to address them) - payback for stopping their Junket I guess.

They have some crazy laws about some Government employees being required to work even without pay.

The whole shutdown thing is akin to our Feds refusing to pass supply bills. And like ours, the USA like to bracket some budget items with others. So his Wall gets bracketed with some supply stuff, pass it if you want people to get paid etc. Bit like here in 1975 in a way when the Govt was starting to sound out banks for loans to tide them over.

Sadly there should be an order of who gets no pay first, Politician Salaries and allowances should be the first to get the chop....that would soon end it.

And yes, Trump thought that the Presidency was akin to a Dictatorship, he found out fast, and to his dismay, that he needed his Congress to approve most things.

More and more the outright lies and distortion by the media and the Democrats in recent events - ie. their outrage and demonisation of Covington high school students when they were innocent in the whole saga, is only going to help get Trump re-elected.

Again, I'm no fan of Trump and I'm not Catholic either, but the Dems are acting like the Spanish Republicans of the early-1930s.  Look how that ended up....

It was all over in a flash. I think there's a few more important issues affecting the political environment in the US at the moment.
